Sleepy Eye Jr. falls in consolation finals
HAYFIELD — Sleepy Eye Junior Legion rolled New London-Spicer 10-1 in the consolation bracket of the DII Junior Legion State Tournament Saturday at Hayfield High School, then fell 2-0 to Le Sueur-Henderson in the consolation finals.
Both games were shortened to five innings due to a rain delay.
Landry Folkens got the complete-game win for Sleepy Eye against NLS, striking out five and allowing one run on four hits. At the plate, Carson Uecker was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, while Jacob Fulmer had a hit, three RBIs and a run scored. Jack Windschitl, Folkens and Chase Zufall all each had a hit and two RBIs.
Fulmer got Sleepy Eye on the board in the first with a two-RBI single. NLS got its lone run of the game in the third on three singles, but Sleepy Eye struck back with a five-run bottom of the inning, with Fulmer, Folkens, Zufall and Karter Haala all picking up RBIs to go up 7-1.
In the fourth inning, Windschitl doubled to plate two runs and Folkens singled to score another to make it a 10-1 game.
Haala took the loss for Sleepy Eye in the game against LSH, striking out one and allowing two runs on four hits. At the plate, Haala and Merrick Mathiwoetz had the only two hits of the game for Sleepy Eye. Both of LSH’s runs came in the top of the fifth inning.
Sleepy Eye finishes the season with a 17-9 overall record.
