SLEEPY EYE — Leavenworth Orioles starting right-hander Mark Anderson didn’t end up needing too much help from his offense Friday night at Sleepy Eye Ballpark.

He got it anyway.

With a run in the first inning, another in the third and six more in the fourth, the Orioles took down the Milroy Yankees 8-1 in a Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament state qualifier, clinching a Class C state tournament appearance for the first time since 2012.

Anderson struck out 12 in seven no-hit innings, allowing four walks while throwing 119 pitches, 68 for strikes.

Jackson Huiras pitched the eighth and ninth in relief of Anderson, allowing two hits and two walks for one earned run while striking out three.

Parker Schmitt got the start on the mound for the Yankees and went 3 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and six walks for four runs, three earned, while striking out two. Schmitt threw 80 pitches, 40 for strikes, before being relieved in the fourth by Austin Deutz.

Austin Deutz ended up finishing the inning, but not before the Orioles collected four hits and two walks off him for four earned runs. Nathan Deutz pitched the final five innings for Milroy, allowing just one hit while striking out six.

Huiras was 2 for 4 with a two-run double to lead the Leavenworth bats.

Milroy got its two hits in the game in the eighth off the bats of Branden Flock and Alex Schuh.

Schmitt had some early trouble in the first finding his spots as he walked the Leavenworth leadoff man Austin Uecker and then Jevan Richert. Schmitt forced Huiras to fly out before Jaden Mickelson drew a walk to load the bases. A swinging strikeout by Caden Evers brought Jackson Ludewig to the plate, who walked to make it a 1-0 game.

Mickelson, who reached on an error, ended up scoring in the third on a passed ball for a 2-0 Orioles lead.

Then came the breakout inning by the Orioles in the fourth, starting with a leadoff single by Ludewig. A flyout by Dylan Hillesheim was followed with a walk to Alex Sellner, bringing up a mound visit and a pitching change to Austin Deutz. Sam Pidde had a ground-ball single to load the bases for Uecker, who walked to make it 3-0.

Richert was walked for a 4-0 score before Huiras doubled to give the Orioles a 6-0 lead. Mickelson singled in the seventh run of the game before Evers hit a sac fly to make it 8-0.

Milroy got its lone run in the bottom of the eighth. Eli Weedman and Jackson Hughes walked to start the Yankees’ half of the inning and Flock singled to load the bases for Schuh, who hit a line-drive single that put the Yankees on the board.

Starting at $4.50/week.
