MAPLE GROVE — It wasn’t a pretty start to the New Ulm Legion Gold’s second day of the DI State Legion Baseball Tournament Friday at Gleason Fields, but that didn’t stop them from responding later in the day to stay alive in the tournament.
The Gold shook off a tough 8-0 afternoon loss to Shakopee, but they showed toughness and patience in a rematch from Thursday against Hastings with a 6-5 win, moving them on to Saturday.
Fittingly, the win over Hastings on Friday will send the Gold from the Green Pool Bracket to the Gold Pool Bracket to take on the Grand Rapids Wolfpack at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the St. Michael Lower Recreation Baseball Field. With Grand Rapids 2-0 in the tournament and Gold 2-1, the Gold will need to defeat Grand Rapids twice on Saturday to win the Gold Pool and advance to Sunday’s semifinals. If Gold wins the 12:30 p.m. game, the second game will take place at 5:30 p.m. Saturday on the same field. A Grand Rapids win clinches the Gold Pool for Grand Rapids and ends New Ulm’s season.
SHAKOPEE 8, NEW ULM 0
In the Gold’s first game of the day Friday, Keegan Hutson pitched a strong six innings for Shakopee in the win and the Shakopee bats did the rest. He finished the game with six innings of work, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out seven in the shutout.

Carson Schroeder was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI to lead Shakopee at the plate, while Colton Jenks was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Ryder Peace was 2 for 4 with a homer, a double and four RBIs.
Kolton Achman took the loss on the mound, going 2 1/3 innings and allowing five hits and a walk for six earned runs while striking out one. Blaine Olson pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief, allowing five hits and two walks for two earned runs while striking out four.
Kyle Albrecht was 2 for 3 with a triple and a double to lead the Gold bats.
Zach Hubbard had a leadoff single to get New Ulm a runner right away in the first, but he was caught stealing shortly after.
Shakopee was quick to get into the scoring column in the first inning off the bat of Peace. Despite his name, Peace created early chaos with a one-out, two-run homer over the fence in right field.

Albrecht doubled to lead off the second, but he was left stranded after a groundout and two strikeouts.
Shakopee poured it on in the bottom of the second with a doubles parade, getting their first runner on with two outs after Devon Drangstveit got on with a hit by pitch. Kyser Boran walked, bringing up Schroeder, who hit the first of three consecutive doubles in the inning to make it 3-0.
Peace hit a ground rule double to score two more runs, while Nick Johnson doubled in Peace for a 6-0 Shakopee lead.
Achman hit two batters in the third and finished the game with four hit batsmen, bringing Olson on in relief. Olson pitched well in relief, striking out the next two batters he saw to escape the two-on trouble.
Olson was a steady hand for Gold on the mound, but Shakopee eventually got to him for two runs in the sixth on a two-run single from Jenks helping seal the deal.
NEW ULM 6, HASTINGS 5
In a rematch from Thursday when New Ulm beat Hastings 3-1 in eight innings, New Ulm’s loss to Hastings dropped it to an elimination game against Hastings, who downed Sauk Rapids 14-5 earlier in the day Friday to continue the season.
Dirk Haynes got the start no decision for the Gold on the mound, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing six hits and four walks for four unearned runs while striking out two.
Caleb Forstner pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief and got the win, allowing two hits for one run, a solo homer in the seventh, while fanning one.
Albrecht was New Ulm’s top guy at the plate again, this time going just 1 for 1 but adding two RBIs and three walks. Forstner added a triple.
Drew Gillespie got the start for Hastings, going four innings and allowing three hits and a walk for three runs, two earned, while striking out three. Chuck Wagner took the loss in three innings of relief, allowing three hits and five walks for three runs.
Luke Niederkorn was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs to lead Hastings, while Gunnar Skov was 2 for 4 and Carter Lundstrom had a solo homer in the seventh.
The Gold took the first lead in the top of the first when Albrecht singled to left to score Hubbard and Jake Finstad. Hubbard reached on a leadoff single, while Finstad was hit by a pitch with one out.
Hastings took the lead in the second on an error and Niederkorn two-run double, but the Gold tied it in the third on a Ben Alfred groundout to score Colin Anderson, who reached on a leadoff error.
Hastings got the lead back at 4-3 in the fourth when Skov toke home on a passed ball and Charlie Rud scored on a sac fly off the bat of Collin Mcguire.
New Ulm took the lead for the final time in the seventh. Finstad reached in that inning on a leadoff error and back-to-back walks to Alfred and Albrecht loaded the bases. A flyout gave Hastings a little room to breathe, but a walk to Parker Neubauer made it a 5-4 game. Ethan Thompson flied out to score Alfred, but the second out turned into two when the throw-in ended up getting Albrecht out at third.
Forstner got two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, a flyout and a strikeout, before Lundstrom got a hold of a pitch and sent it over the wall in left to have Hastings down 6-5. A single by Skov was followed by a pop out to Albrecht to end the game.
