Area roundup: Springfield wins extra-inning Sub-State opener

Springfield 3, St. James 2
TRUMAN — Springfield Post 257 opened their time in the DII Southwest Sub-State Legion Baseball Tournament in exciting fashion Thursday with a 3-2 win over St. James in 11 innings.
Madden Lendt was the hero for Springfield with his go-ahead RBI single in the 11th inning to put his team up 3-2. Lendt finished the game going 4 for 6 with a double and go-ahead RBI, while Adiel Trevino was 2 for 5.
Noah Neperman got the start and no decision for Springfield, giving up six hits and three walks for two runs, one earned, while striking out nine. Trevino got the win in 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing no hits and one walk for no runs while striking out two.
Jackson Ludewig also pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief for Springfield, allowing no hits and two walks for no runs while striking out two.
Springfield plays Sleepy Eye at 5 p.m. Friday in a winners bracket game in Truman, while St. James falls to the losers bracket to play Truman at 2 p.m. Friday in Truman.
Sleepy Eye 11, Truman 1 (5 innings)
TRUMAN — Sleepy Eye Legion Post 7 ran by Truman 11-1 in five innings on Thursday in a DII Southwest Sub-State Legion Baseball Tournament opener.
Tyler Mathiowetz was 2 for 2 with a double to lead Sleepy Eye, while Marcus Martinez was 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs and Jon Petermann was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Carson Uecker added a double and two RBIs also for Post 7.
Kayden Klein got the five-inning win on the mound, allowing five hits and no walks for one earned run while striking out five.
Bryce Borkenhagen was 2 for 2 with a homer, a double and an RBI to lead Truman at the plate, while Carson Hostad, Braeden Shell and Bowan Sill each went 1 for 2.
Shell took the pitching loss in four innings, allowing eight hits and two walks for 10 runs, nine earned, while striking out five.
Sleepy Eye will play Springfield in a winners bracket game in Truman at 5 p.m. Friday, while Truman falls to the losers bracket to play St. James at 2 p.m. Friday in Truman.
Luverne 8, Wabasso 3
TRUMAN — Luverne topped Wabasso 8-3 on Thursday in the first round of the DII Southwest Sub-State Legion Baseball Tournament.
Jack Burns was 2 for 2 to lead Wabasso at the plate, while Kaysen Harms was 1 for 4 with an RBI. Zach Skoblik took the pitching loss in 4 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and five walks for eight runs, three earned, while striking out three.
Wabasso will play USC (Wells) in an 11 a.m. elimination game in Truman on Friday, while Luverne moves on in the winners bracket to play Windom at 8 p.m. Friday in Truman.
