Sleepy Eye defeats Wabasso in Sub-Sub-State Championship

SPRINGFIELD — Marcus Martinez pitched a one-hitter to lead Sleepy Eye Senior Legion to a 10-0 victory in six innings over Wabasso Saturday to give Sleepy Eye the top seed coming out of the Sub-Sub-State District B Tournament.
Wabasso will be the second seed from District B as both teams advance the Southwest Sub-State Tournament that begins Thursday in Truman.
Martinez added two strikeouts and five walks to the box score in the win, while Kaden Klein had two hits and two runs scored for Sleepy Eye. Talan Helget had a hit, three RBIs and a runs scored, while Carson Uecker had a hit and two runs scored and Jon Petermann had a hit, an RBI and a run scored.
Jack Burns took the loss for Wabasso, striking out four and allowing seven earned runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. Kaysen Harms had the lone hit for Wabasso.
Helget batted in the first two runs for Sleepy Eye to start a six-run third inning. Helget singled to score Carson Uecker and Kam Kosak after they reached base on a hit by pitch and a walk, respectively. Austin Uecker scored next on a sacrifice fly from Cody Schutlz, then Petermann hit a single to score Helget. Finally Tyler Mathiowetz grounded in to a fielder’s choice to shortstop, but a throwing error allowed Klein and Petermann to both score to make it a 6-0 game.
Carson Uecker singled to start out the fourth and was bunted all the way to third by Austin Uecker, then Helget sent a sacrifice fly to center field to score Carson Uecker for a 7-0 game. Harms got his single in the top of the fifth, allowing Burns to advance to third after he walked, but a flyout ended the inning without a score.
Needing three runs to end the game early in the sixth, Landon Wendinger hit a triple to get on base with one out for Sleepy Eye. Wendinger was balked home to make it an 8-0 game, then Chino Luna reached on an error. Kaden Klein singled to put runners on first and second, then an error put into play by Merrick Mathiowetz brought home Luna and Klein to finish out the 10-0 win.
