BROOKINGS, S.D. — New Ulm VFW Silver opened tournament play in Brookings, South Dakota, Friday with a 6-3 win over Renner and a 9-0 shutout over Aberdeen.
In the win over Renner, Colin McAlpine got the pitching win in four innings, allowing just two walks and no walks for no runs while striking out two. Miles Castleman led Silver at the plate, going 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Owen Castleman doubled and drove in two runs.
Miles Castleman got the start on the mound and win over Aberdeen in five innings of work, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out seven.
Evan Starke was 3 for 3 with an RBI to lead Silver at the plate, while Parker Ranweiler was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Owen Castleman added a hit and three RBIs in the win over Aberdeen.
Silver plays Harrisburg Gold and the Dakota Tigers on Saturday as the tourney continues.
JR. LEGION BASEBALL
New Ulm 13, Aitkin 1
New Ulm 4, Elk River 3
ALEXANDRIA — New Ulm Junior Legion Gold earned a pair of tournament wins on Friday in Alexandria, defeating Aitkin 13-1 in six innings and Elk River 4-3 in nine innings.
In the big win over Aitkin, New Ulm was led by Tanner Backer’s 2-for-3 day at the plate, which included a walk and three runs scored, while Levi Hopp and Josh Forstner each went 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Caleb Forstner got the win on the mound for Jr. Gold against Aitkin, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing eight hits and two walks for one earned run while striking out six. Hunter Larson got the final two outs for Jr. Gold in relief, striking out one.
Evan Blekestad provided the extra-inning, game-winning hit over Elk River in the ninth on a ground-ball single to left to bring home Alex Portner. Larson led Jr. Gold at the plate, going 2 for 3, while Eli Anderson doubled and drove in a run. Candon Briggs got the start for New Ulm and went eight innings, allowing 11 hits and two walks for one earned run while striking out five. Mitchell Hopp pitched the ninth in relief to earn the win, allowing no hits, walks or runs while striking out one.
New Ulm continues tournament play in Alexandria on Saturday.
LEGION BASEBALL
Sleepy Eye 14, Jackson 0
SPRINGFIELD — Sleepy Eye Legion Post 7 shut out Jackson 14-0 on Friday in a DII Sub-Sub State District B playoff baseball game.
The game ended in five innings due to the 10-run lead rule.
Cody Schultz got the win in five innings, allowing one hit while striking out one. Austin Uecker was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, three runs scored and two stolen bases to lead Sleepy Eye at the plate, while Schultz was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Jon Petermann was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs also for Sleepy Eye.
Sleepy Eye will take on Wabasso at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Springfield in the Sub-Sub State championship game, with the winner getting the No. 1 seed and the loser getting the No. 2 seed in the Sub-State tournament.
Jackson will play Springfield at 5 p.m. in Springfield Saturday.
Springfield fell 5-2 to Wabasso to drop to the third-place game, which will determine the third and final seed in the Sub-State tourney from District B.
The DII Sub-State playoffs begin in Truman on Thursday.
