NEW ULM — New Ulm Legion Gold has now won five straight games.
Jake Finstad scattered six hits and struck out 11 as Gold downed Tri-City Maroon 7-3 Friday night at Johnson Park.
Zach Hubbard, Elliot Schabert and Dirk Haynes each had two hits, with Schabert and Haynes both each driving in two runs.
Brady Donnelly took the loss for TCM. He went five innings and was charged with all seven runs.
“We had good pitching, pretty good defense (one error allowed one run to score) and our bats came to life,” Gold head coach Curt Forbrook said.
Tri-City scored an unearned run in the first inning, but Gold erased that lead with two runs in the second, third and fourth innings.
In the second Ethan Thompson walked and Schabert followed with a single. A Kyle Albrecht sacrifice bunt moved both runners up. Dirk Haynes followed with a two-run single.
Gold, who plays TCM Saturday at noon at Mueller Park, tacked on two more runs in the third. Hubbard singled and Colin Anderson walked.
A Finstad groundout put both runners in scoring position for Schabert, who drove them both in with a single to center.
New Ulm upped the anty to 6-1 in the fourth. Haynes singled and was sacrificed to second by Cohen Domeier. He scored on an Anderson single and ensuing error.
A Finstad base hit later scored Anderson. An Albrecht single in the sixth plated Thompson for a 7-1 lead.
TCM scored twice in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 7-3.
Forbrook said that overall it was a good game by his team, now 10-8 on the season.
“It was not as good as Thursday (a 3-0 win over St. Peter), but I like the direction that we are going,” Forbrook said. “And we are gaining confidence each game that we play — they are having more fun coming to the ballpark right now.”
