SLEEPY EYE — The Sleepy Eye VFW baseball team got back on track Wednesday evening at the expense of two junior legion ball clubs, running past Maple River Junior Legion and holding off St. James Junior Legion in a split doubleheader at Sleepy Eye Ballpark.

Sleepy Eye ended a three-game skid after downing Maple River 8-2 and then ended the night with a 4-2 win over St. James.

Sleepy Eye (5-3) got a strong mound showing from starting pitcher Caleb Oscarson against Maple River as the righty struck out 13 in a complete-game effort. Oscarson walked six and allowed four hits but limited the damage to just two runs.

Meanwhile, his defense behind him stayed sharp without any errors while the Sleepy Eye bats gave him an early boost as they took a 4-0 lead in the second inning.

Oscarson gave up a leadoff hit to Chase Urban to start the game, but he got a groundout, strikeout and another groundout to end the inning. He didn’t allow another hit until the fifth inning after that.

Four more Sleepy Eye runs scored in the fourth, led by an RBI single by Braulick.

An Emery Stevens RBI single brought in the first Maple River run of the game in the fifth and an RBI single from Nolan Vait in the sixth made the final score.

St. James took a 2-1 lead in the third, which held until the bottom of the fifth when Sleepy Eye had one-out doubles from Nelson and Hulke. A strikeout saw two outs in the inning, but Portner singled in the tying run, Evers singled in the go-ahead run and Sleepy Eye held on after that.
