NEW ULM — When you play bad baseball, you are going to get beat.
That happened twice on Saturday to New Ulm Legion Gold as they dropped two games to conclude their time in the Upper Midwest Classic.
Gold fell 7-1 to Springfield, Nebraska, in their first game before dropping a 12-3 loss to Luverne at night, both at Johnson Park.
Gold was guilty of five errors in each game and left 10 men on base in their first game before leaving 14 runners on base in the nightcap.
New Ulm had seven hits against Sprinfield before being held to just two hits by the Luverne combination of Marcus Vortherms and Elliot Domagala in Game 2.
“Right now we are not playing good baseball,” Gold coach Curt Forbrook said. “It starts with our fielding — we have to get better. Our pitching has been decent enough overall — but we need more hits (nine in two games). We are in a tough spot right now, but we will get out of it. We need to make our own breaks right now and we are not doing that.”
Caleb Forstner took the mound loss in Game 1, going 3 1/3 innings and allowing seven runs. However, he was backed by a defense that allowed six unearned runs to score.
Zach Hubbard had three of New Ulm’s seven hits in the game.
In Game 2, Kolton Achman took the loss, being charged with eight runs, five unearned, while striking out six.
Blake Sauer led Luverne with three hits as Luverne outhit New Ulm 13-2 and Gold stranded 14 runners on base — eight of them in scoring position.
“We have some kids frustrated, but it is relatively early in our season and we will get there,” Forbrook said.
