TEL roundup: Cubs keep rolling, earn 3rd straight shutout

COURTLAND — The Courtland Cubs earned their third consecutive shutout win and stayed undefeated in Tomahawk East League action Sunday after a TEL amateur baseball split doubleheader.

The Cubs shut out the Lamberton Long Sox 10-0 Sunday afternoon in seven innings and downed the Fairfax Cardinals 16-0 in seven innings later in the day.

Both games ended in seven innings due to the 10-run rule lead.

In the win over Lamberton, Carter Lang was 1 for 3 with a double and three RBIs, while Maddox Mortensen was 1 for 1 with two RBIs. Jackson Bode got the win in six innings, allowing two hits and one walk with 10 strikeouts.

Lamberton got its two hits in the game on singles from Travis Willhite and Colby Wall. Josh Altermatt took the loss in three innings, allowing four hits and no walks for six runs, two earned, while striking out one.

In the rout of Fairfax, Courtland was led by Jaden Drill, who was 3 for 3 with a homer and five RBIs, while Nolan Drill was 3 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs and Lang was 3 for 3 with two doubles, an RBI and four runs scored. Tad Voges and Teagan Kamm also each had two hits and two RBIs apiece for the Cubs. Ansen Dulas got the win on the mound, allowing three hits and no walks while fanning seven in six innings.

Jacob Meyer was 2 for 3 to lead Fairfax at the plate, Tyler Fish took the loss in five innings, allowing 16 hits and two walks for 13 runs, 10 earned.

The Cubs moved to 11-0 in TEL play with the wins. Lamberton is now 4-3 in the TEL, while Fairfax is 1-7.

Springfield 6, Gibbon 4

GIBBON — The Springfield Tigers overcame a four-run fourth inning by the Gibbon Reds to come back and earn a 6-4 win on Sunday in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game.

Jordan Milbrath got the win for Springfield, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing just one hit and six walks for no runs while striking out seven. Kade Nachreiner had the start for Springfield on the mound, allowing six hits and a walk for four runs, three earned, while striking out four. Tori Helget allowed one hit and got the save for Springfield.

Milbrath was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI also at the plate to lead Springfield, while Nachreiner, Decker Scheffler and Brandon Wilhelmi each went 2 for 4. Jacob Poehler was 1 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs also for Springfield.

Brendan Kienlen was 3 for 3 to lead Gibbon at the plate. Dominic Rose took the loss in seven innings of work, allowing 10 hits and three walks or five earned runs while striking out eight.

Springfield is now 5-2 in the TEL, while Gibbon is 3-5.

Sleepy Eye 5, Hanska 0 (5 innings)

SLEEPY EYE — The Sleepy Eye Indians earned a 5-0 shutout over the Hanska Lakers on Sunday in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game.

The game was called after five innings due to rain.

Sleepy Eye was led by Nick Mielke, who was 2 for 2 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored, while Cody Schultz doubled and added an RBI. Chino Luna and Jake Mielke each had a hit and an RBI also for Sleepy Eye. Marcus Martinez got the win in five innings, allowing one hit and three walks while fanning two.

Hanska’s lone hit came off the bat of Kevin Larson, who was 1 for 3. Brady Mosenden pitched three innings and took the loss, allowing six hits and no walks for five runs, three earned, while striking out two.

Sleepy Eye is now 5-2 in the TEL, while Hanska is 5-6.

Saturday

New Ulm 10, Stark 0

STARK — The New Ulm Brewers piled up 16 hits on the way to a 10-0 win over the Stark Longhorns on Saturday in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game.

Ethan Stade and Mitch Bockenstedt shared pitching duties for the Brewers as they combined to allow just one hit and one walk. Stade pitched three innings and allowed one walk while striking out nine, while Bockenstedt pitched four innings while allowing one hit and striking out six.

Justin Hoffmann led New Ulm at the plate, going 4 for 5 with three runs scored, while Lucas Suess was 3 for 4 with an RBI and Andrew Peters was 2 for 3 with a homer, a double and three RBIs. Zach More also went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, while Ayden Jensen was 2 for 4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored and Ethan Thompson added a double.

Adam Sellner had Stark’s lone hit, going 1 for 2. Nick Labat took the loss in three innings, allowing nine hits and two walks for five earned runs while striking out five.

New Ulm moved to 6-3 in the TEL with the win, while Stark fell to 4-4 in the TEL.

Friday

Courtland 10, Gibbon 0

COURTLAND — Behind four home runs, the Courtland Cubs shut down the Gibbon Reds 10-0 on Friday night in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game.

The game ended in seven innings due to the 10-run lead rule.

Teddy Giefer homered twice for the Cubs, in the fourth and sixth innings, while Jackson Bode and Nolan Drill also each added a homer. Giefer finished going 2 for 3 with five RBIs, while Drill was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Carter Lang got the win in five innings of work, allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out three. Chase Meyer pitched two innings in relief and allowed two hit and a walk while fanning four.

Nolan Huiras, Brendan Kienlen and Jacob Kropifko each had one of Gibbon’s three hits in the game. Layton Hamre took the loss in six innings, allowing eight hits and seven walks for 10 earned runs while striking out four.
