Benson 2 strokes ahead of Larson in New Ulm Invitational
NEW ULM — With the first leg of the 65th annual New Ulm Invitational in the books, last year’s champion and seven-time winner Johnny Larson has some competition at the New Ulm Country Club.
After Larson finished his first round with a solid 1-over-par 72, he sat two strokes under Saturday’s leader in the Championship Flight, that leader being Brett Benson. Benson shot a 1-under-par 70 with two birdies and just one bogey keeping him ahead of the pack.
Jay Kautt and Shane Kvidera both shot a 2-over-par 73 to tie for third Saturday, while John Enter sat fifth with a 4-over-par 75. Luke Stull sat in sixth place with a 5-over-par 76.
The second round begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, with the championship nine beginning around 3:30 p.m.
In the Regular Division First Flight Saturday, Andis Kancans shot a 72 to dominate the field, with Anthony Sanders sitting second with an 81 and Dean Welsch and Matt Holm tied for third with 82s.
Zach Quiring sits first in the Second Flight with an 82, ahead of Greg Schmitz in second (83) and Randy Kirchberg in third (84).
In the Third Flight, Patrick Bakken shot an 82 to lead the way Saturday, followed by Mike Peterson (83) and Corey Hillesheim (84).
The Regular Division Fourth Net Flight saw Gregg Holm and Johnny Eichten sit tied for first with 70s, followed by Josh Sabatino in third with a 71.
In the Senior Division First Flight, Darren Anderson sat in first with a 2-under-par 69, while Jerry Boddy was second with a 72 and Joe Horan was third with a 75.
The Senior Division Second Flight was led by Randy Wiltscheck, who carded a 70, while Bruce Gieseke shot a 73 for second and Don Olson had a 74 to sit in third place after Saturday.
The Senior Championship Flight was led by Jason Wieland, who had a 79, while Matt Pearson and Tim Andersen sat tied for second (80).
