BECKER — Clearing one’s mind and not overthinking can do wonders for a person, and it did so for New Ulm Cathedral senior Owen Strei on Wednesday.

On the final day of the Class A State Golf Tournament at Pebble Creek Golf Club, Strei turned in the area’s top performance as he finished his final round just three strokes over par.

That 3-over-par 75 allowed Strei to crack the top 20 in the boys tournament and finish with a tie for 15th place overall.

Strei shot an 81 on Tuesday, improving six strokes Wednesday to finish with a 156 two-day total.

“Obviously I would have liked to have shot better and placed lower, but that’s kind of every player that plays the game of golf, you know you can do better and you expect better,” Strei said. “I’m happy with where I ended up overall.”

Strei, who began on the back nine at Pebble Creek Wednesday, had a par on every hole but Holes 13, 14 and 16 to sit just three strokes over par heading into his final nine. He further climbed the leaderboard with two birdies on his final nine, one coming on the par-4 third hole and the second coming on the par-5 fifth hole.

“Today I feel the big difference from yesterday was probably my mood, that was probably the biggest thing I can say,” Strei said. “I felt Day 1 I might have took it a little too seriously and let a couple shots affect me that shouldn’t have. Going into Day 2, I kind of just laid back a little bit and was like, ‘This is my last time here, I’m going to enjoy it. Hit one shot at a time and see what happens.'”

Strei said while it sprinkled on and off during his first nine holes, it rained heavily during his final nine, which actually made it easier for him.

“I’m a good weather player, so it didn’t bother me too much,” Strei said. “But it made things a little easier softening everything up.”

Sleepy Eye United also had both its boys and girls team finish up their time in the state tournament, with the girls team taking sixth out of eight teams with a two-day score of 798 and the boys team finishing seventh out of eight with a two-day score of 679.
