VFW Silver holds off Sleepy Eye

NEW ULM — Parker Ranweiler and Owen Castleman each had two hits as New Ulm Silver downed Sleepy Eye VFW 4-3 Tuesday at Mueller Park.
Evan Starke got the pitching win for Silver (4-1). He went five innings and allowed two runs on five hits. Colin McAlpine allowed one run in relief.
Derek Wales took the loss for Sleepy Eye.
Jaxon Saenz, Adam Braulick and Kyle Nelson each had two hits for Sleepy Eye.
“This was a great game for us,” Eric Portner, Silver assistant coach said. “And we brought it right back into this game, too. We did lose our focus, and Evan was super efficient. He pounded the zone and made them throw strikes.”
Sleepy Eye took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Braulick RBI single.
But Silver pushed two runs across in the bottom of the inning on a Ranweiler single and an Castleman triple. Castleman scored on a Paxton Johnson single.
Sleepy Eye tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third on a Saenz RBI single.
But in the bottom of the inning, Ranweiler singled and stole second. Castleman followed with a single that scored Ranweiler.
Castleman trotted home on a Cole Voges single.
Portner said that the two hits each from Ranweiler and Owen Castleman was “why they are hitting three and four in the lineup.”
Sleepy Eye pulled to within 4-3 in the sixth but McAlpine closed out the seventh for the win.
Silver was coming off a weekend tournament in Luverne in which they won all three games to win the tourney. They beat Sanford Black 15-2, Luverne 8-0 and St. James 11-6.
Ryler Collins led Silver in the win over Sandford with three hits and five RBIs. He also got the win on the mound in four innings with seven strikeouts.
In the shutout over Luverne, Castleman got the win on the mound in five innings, allowing just two hits while fanning four in the shutout. He also led the way at the plate, going 3 for 3.
Ranweiler led Silver in the win over St. James by going 3 for 5 with a double. He also got the mound win in 4 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run while striking out three.
