Two area teams, six individuals prep for state golf

The 2025 State Boys and Girls Golf Tournaments begin Tuesday, with three different classes teeing off at three separate courses in Minnesota.

The Class A Tournament begins Tuesday at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, while the Class AA Tournament begins Tuesday at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan. The Class AAA tournament begins at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.

Golfers will take their respective courses for practice rounds on Monday morning before teeing off the first round of action on Tuesday and concluding the state tournament on Wednesday.

CLASS A

Representing the area from Class A will be the Sleepy Eye United boys and girls golf teams. The Section 2A individual boys champion in New Ulm Cathedral’s Owen Strei will also compete at state, along with Springfield’s Braiden Davis. The Springfield girls duo of Mavri Winkelmann and Ava Lipetzky will compete in the Class A girls state tournament.

For the SEU girls, who won the Section 2A team title Monday for the fourth year in a row, Sam Price leads the way after finishing the Section 2A tourney as the girls champion, carding a two-day total of 167 to repeat as section champion. Price is also the first-ever Tomahawk-Valley Conference individual girls champion and is averaging a 44.3 nine-hole score this season.

Kiara Murphy (49.8/9), Chloe Walter (51.6/9), Ella Pollard (54/9), Elizabeth Currans (66/9) and Caroline Currans (65.7/9) round out the SEU girls competing at state this year. The SEU girls will tee off on Hole 10, with Elizabeth Currans teeing off first for the team at 8:11 a.m., followed by Caroline Currans at 8:20 a.m. Pollard tees off at 8:29 a.m., while Walter tees off at 8:47 a.m., Murphy tees off at 8:56 a.m. and Price tees off at 9:05 a.m.

The SEU boys team will be represented by George Schwint (45.1/9), Josh Sellner (43.7/9), Nolan Kucera (39.5), Blaine Arneson (41.3/9), Anders Coulson (42.3/9) and Isaac Christensen (44.2/9). Schwint is scheduled to tee off first for the SEU boys on Tuesday on Hole 10 at 12:41 p.m., while Christensen will tee off on Hole 10 at 12:50 p.m. and Sellner tees off at 12:50 p.m., Coulson tees off at 1:17 p.m., Arneson tees off at 1:26 p.m. and Kucera tees off at 1:35 p.m., all on Hole 10.

Strei shot a 78 on Monday to finish with a 156 overall at the Section 2A tournament and qualify for another trip to state. Strei is also the inaugural Tomahawk-Valley Conference and has a nine-hole average of 38.3 this season.

Strei is scheduled to tee off on Hole 1 at 1:08 p.m. Tuesday, while Davis (42/9) will tee off at 12:08 p.m. on Hole 10.

Winkelmann (47/9) will tee off on the girls side of the Class A tourney at 7:54 a.m. on Hole 1, while Lipetzky (50.6/9) will tee off at 7:38 a.m. on Hole 1.

CLASS AA

In Class AA action Tuesday, the New Ulm boys golf team will see the Buegler brothers in action as senior Jaxon Buegler and sophomore Mason Buegler take Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan on Tuesday. Jaxon Buegler finished with a two-day score of 130 at Oakdale Golf Course on May 28 to finish as the co-section champion and qualify for state, while Mason Buegler carded a wo-day total of 149 to qualify for state with his older brother.

Both Buegler brothers bring a nine-hole scoring average of 38.9 into the tournament.

Jaxon Buegler will tee off first for the Eagles at 12:24 p.m. Tuesday on Hole 10, while Mason Buegler will tee off at 12:32 p.m. on Hole 10.
