Wolverines fall to Maple River in 2AA playoffs
GAYLORD — The No. 2-seeded Sibley East Wolverines were defeated by the No. 3-seeded Maple River Eagles on Thursday in a Section 2AA Baseball Tournament quarterfinals game at Walsh Field.
The Wolverines (14-7) fell to elimination play with the loss and will take on No. 1-seeded Le Sueur-Henderson at 1 p.m. Saturday at Le Sueur-Henderson High School. LSH was upset by No. 8-seeded Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial 3-0 in the second round of the tournament on May 27 to fall to elimination play. LSH then defeated Tri-City United 4-3 on May 29 to advance to Saturday’s game with Sibley East.
Meanwhile, LCWM moved on to defeat fifth-seeded Belle Plaine 8-4 in the quarterfinals and will play Maple River at 11 a.m. Saturday at LSH High School in the semifinals.
In the Wolverines’ loss to Maple River, the Eagles built a 6-1 lead thanks to a four-run fourth inning. The Wolverines got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth, but a scoreless three innings followed and the Wolverines were sent to the elimination bracket.
Nathan Schauer led the Wolverines’ bats with a 2-for-2 day at the plate while adding an RBI. Leyton Dose also doubled, walked and scored two runs for Sibley East, while Riley Bussler had a hit, an RBI and a walk and Carson Schmidt had an RBI.
Quintin DeVlaeminck took the loss in a three-inning start on the mound, allowing seven hits for three earned runs while striking out one.
The winner of the Sibley East-LSH elimination game will meet the winner of Saturday’s Triton-Belle Plaine elimination game at 5 p.m. this Tuesday at LSH High School and play the loser of Saturday’s semifinals game later that same night at 7:30 p.m. The winner of that 7:30 p.m. elimination game will then play in the section finals this coming Thursday and will need two wins to move on to state, while their opponent from the winners bracket will need just one win.
