Wolverines claw past NRHEG in 2AA tourney

GAYLORD — The No. 2-seeded Sibley East held off No. 7-seeded New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva 3-1 Tuesday in the second round of the Section 2AA Baseball Tournament at Walsh Field.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Nate Colling walked and scored later on a wild pitch, the Wolverines made it 3-0 in the fifth thanks to an error that scored Ashton McCue and an RBI single from Will Feterl that scored Riley Bussler.

NRHEG got a run back in the seventh off Sibley East starting pitcher Caden Willmsen, but Quintin DeVlaeminck entered and got the final two outs for the save.

Willmsen ended up pitching 6 1/3 innings in the win, allowing four hits and three walks for one earned run while striking out 11.

Carson Schmidt, Feterl and Nathan Schauer each had one of Sibley East’s three hits in the game.

The Wolverines host No. 3-seeded Maple River in the winners bracket quarterfinals at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
