SPRINGFIELD — The No. 7-seeded Sleepy Eye Indians broke a scoreless tie in the top of the eighth and held on in the bottom of the extra inning to take down the No. 2-seeded Springfield Tigers on Tuesday night in a Section 2A Baseball Tournament game.
Cody Schultz held the Tigers to just three hits and four walks while striking out five in his eight-inning mound win for Sleepy Eye (12-9), which now takes on No. 6-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in a winners bracket game at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Carson Uecker led the Indians at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a double.
With Kayden Klein reaching to start the eighth inning on a hit by pitch, Schultz doubled Klein to third before Springfield starter Kade Nachreiner coaxed a groundout to keep the game scoreless. Landon Wendinger got a hold of a pitch on the next at-bat, however, sending a double into center field to make it 2-0 Sleepy Eye. After a strikeout, Nachreiner allowed an RBI single to Cole Eckstein to make it 3-0 before Jackson Ludewig entered in relief for Springfield and forced a flyout to end the damage.
Noah Neperman singled with one out in the bottom of the inning, but Schultz got a strikeout before Uecker, who was catching for Sleepy Eye, threw out courtesy runner Ely Streich trying to take second to end the game.
Neperman, Madden Lendt and Nate Mueller each had singles for Springfield. Nachreiner took the loss in 7 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and three walks for two earned runs while striking out seven.
Springfield (14-5) hosts Cleveland in a win-or-go home elimination game at 5 p.m. Thursday.
St. Mary’s 8, Cleveland 2
CLEVELAND — Much like their crosstown rival Sleepy Eye High School, Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s was also able to go on the road Tuesday and pull off an upset in the Section 2A Baseball Tournament as the No. 6-seeded Knights knocked off No. 3-seeded Cleveland 8-2.
St. Mary’s (12-10) will now play the host to its crosstown rival Sleepy Eye Indians in a 5 p.m. winners bracket playoff game Thursday.
St. Mary’s took a 6-0 lead in the game after single runs in the second and third innings and four runs in the fourth. Cleveland (14-5) got a run in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings, but the Knights got two in the top of the sixth to keep the Clippers at bay.
Merrick Mathiowetz got the complete-game win for St. Mary’s, allowing five hits and one walk for one earned run while striking out seven. He also was 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI at the plate to help lead the Knights’ offense, while Tyler Mathiowetz was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Brandon Braulick, Jack Windschitl and Talan Helget each added singles for the Knights, with Helget adding an RBI.
Miles Tomaszewski took the loss in four innings for Cleveland, allowing four hits and four walks for four earned runs while striking out four.
