NEW ULM — New Ulm Brewers pitcher Ethan Stade struck out a team-record 26 batters as the Brewers downed Bird Island 5-0 Friday night in non-league amateur baseball game at Mueller Park.

Stade, who threw 116 pitches in the game, broke the New Ulm Amateur baseball record of 24 set back in 1967 by lefthander Dick Cordes with the New Ulm Millers.

The only out in the game that did not come via the strikeout occurred in the top of the ninth inning when Trent Althman grounded out to first to lead off the ninth inning.

It was also a game where Stade recorded an “Immaculate Inning” when he struck out three Bullfrogs batters on nine pitches — which happened in the fifth inning — and came two innings after a 10-pitch third inning.

Casey Lewandowski took the loss for Bird Island. He went six innings and allowed one run on seven hits.

Colton Schaefer had three hits for the Brewers, with Justin Hoffmann, Cole Ranweiler and Sam Keckeisen each adding two hits. Trevor Nissen added a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh.

But the story of the game was the lefthanded Stade.

“Twenty-six strikeouts is just perfect.” Stade said. “I don’t care what the scoreboard says — I gave up two hits and I walked one [with one batter reaching base on an error].”

Stade said that he felt pretty comfortable all game.

“There was nothing in my body that hurt — my mechanics felt great — and my fastball was really good. It was my best pitch.”

The Brewers, who host Lamberton Monday at 4 p.m. at Johnson Park, scored an unearned run in the third when Josh Seidl reached on an error and later scored on a Hoffmann single.

New Ulm then added three runs in the bottom of the seventh with two runs coming off of the bat of Nissen on a double and one coming off of an error.

An Ethan Thompson triple in the eighth and a wild pitch made it 5-0.

But earlier as the game went along, Stade said that when it got to the fifth inning, (55 pitches) he talked to Brewers manager Al Flor about going on.

“He [Flor] told me that he has never seen this before [all 15 outs by strikeout] .As the strikeouts came I said I would finish it.”

Stade said that he has never had an Immaculate Inning in his career.

“And I had not noticed that I had did that,” he said. “One of the innings before I was one strike away. But right now, I do not know what to feel right now. Words do not even explain how great this feels.”

Flor, who has been involved in amateur baseball all of his life, said that he has never seen anything like Friday.

“His pitch count got up there, but he wanted the ball and it would have been hard to take the ball away from him.”
