PREP SOFTBALL
Springfield 18, JWP 6 (6 innings)
JANESVILLE — A 10-run sixth inning helped No. 9-seeded Springfield run past No. 8-seeded Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton early in six innings Wednesday in a Section 2A Softball Tournament first-round game.
After allowing five runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers doubled that in the top of the sixth to take an 18-5 lead before allowing one more run to score in the bottom of the sixth. The game ended in the sixth due to the 10-run lead rule.
Kali Nachreiner led the Tigers at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Abby Groebner was 2 for 3 with a double, four RBIs and three runs scored. Jasmine Novotny was 2 for 2 with a triple, an RBI and four runs scored also for Springfield, while Makay Winkelmann was 2 for 5 with a double and two RBIs and Regan Beadell doubled and drove in two runs.
Beadell got the win in the circle in all six innings, allowing eight hits and seven walks for six earned runs while striking out one.
Springfield will play top-seeded United South Central in the second round at 5 p.m. Thursday in Wells. The winner of that game moves on in the winners bracket to play Saturday, while the loser falls to elimination-bracket play Saturday, both playing at Caswell Park.
MCW 14, MVL 2 (5 innings)
WELCOME — Third-seeded Martin County West defeated 15th-seeded Minnesota Valley Lutheran 14-2 in five innings in a Section 2A Softball Tournament game on Wednesday.
Nora Grace Otto took the loss, striking out two while allowing 11 earned runs on 13 hits and five walks. At the plate, Karlee Prahl was 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Otto had an RBI and Morgan Black had a hit.
MVL finishes its season with a 2-17 record.
MLA/C 15, Madelia 0 (4 innings)
MOUNTAIN LAKE — No. 7-seeded Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey downed No. 10-seeded Madelia 15-0 in four innings in a Section 2A Softball Tournament game on Wednesday.
Emily Jacobs took the loss, striking out two while allowing 13 runs on 13 hits. At the plate, Kellie Koberoski was 2 for 2, while Makayla Sorenson and Jacobs each had a hit.
Madelia ends its season with a 5-15 record.
GIRLS GOLF
New Ulm, MVL complete Day 1 of section meet
BUFFALO LAKE — New Ulm placed 11th and Minnesota Valley Luthreran placed 13th on Day 1 of the Section 3AA Girls Golf Tournament on Wednesday.
New Ulm’s Lillian Kral advanced to the second day of the tournament, shooting a 105 on the day. Following was Rory Gieseke (107), Brogan Thordson (113), Maddy Wellmann (115), and Lydia Osborne and Chloe Kelley (126).
For the MVL girls, Eden Grubbs led with a 125, followed by Scarlet Heldt (127), Carmella Joshi (131), Kara Hinrichsen (133), Annika Lowrey (141) and Emma Beussman (144).
Day 2 of the tournament will continues on Wednesday at Oakdale Golf Club at 10 a.m.
