Sleepy Eye tops St. Clair in regular season finale
ST. PETER — The Sleepy Eye baseball team ended its regular season by holding off St. Clair 8-7 on Monday in a nonconference baseball game at Gustavus Adolphus College.
Cody Schultz led Sleepy Eye at the plate, going 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI, while Jacob Fulmer was 2 for 3 with a double and three runs scored and Landon Wendinger had a triple and two RBIs. Cole Eckstein also had a double for Sleepy Eye.
Gavin Strong pitched five innings for the win, allowing five hits and two walks for four earned runs while striking out five. Eric Lozano pitched the final two innings for the save, allowing three hits and a walk for one unearned run while striking out one.
Sleepy Eye had an 8-0 lead after the first four innings, while St. Clair scored six in the sixth inning to mount a comeback.
With an 8-6 Sleepy Eye lead heading into the seventh, St. Clair led off the inning by getting Ashton Wilmes on base after an error before a walk to Danny Nicolai and a single by Will Youngerbird filled the bases for Avery Anderson, who singled in a run. Lozano then forced a pop out for the first out of the inning before a lineout to Schultz in left was turned into a double play to end the game when Schultz threw to second base to get Youngerberg out while trying to advance.
Sleepy Eye (10-9) awaits Thursday’s first round of the Section 2A playoffs, with seedings to be released Tuesday.
