Eagles win Big South title for 2nd straight year

JACKSON — The New Ulm Eagles softball team captured its second consecutive Big South Conference championship on Saturday with an 11-5 win over Jackson County Central.

Ramsey Hopp got the complete-game win for the Eagles, now 16-3. The senior right-hander finished with five strikeouts while allowing five hits and a walk for two earned runs.

At the plate for New Ulm, Megan Brudelie was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, two runs scored, a stolen base and a hit by pitch, while Berkley Wilfahrt was 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI, a run scored and a walk. Mya Hornick was also 2 for 3 for the Eagles and added an RBI, two runs scored and a hit by pitch, while Lauren Schmiesing was 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored and Kenzie Enter was 1 for 3 with three RBIs.

The Eagles now turn to the double-elimination Section 2AAA playoffs, which begin at 5 p.m. Thursday in North Mankato at Caswell Park.
