River Valley girls take Tomahawk-Valley track and field title

SLEEPY EYE — Dominating the girls relays and middle-distance events, the River Valley girls track team won the Tomahawk-Valley Conference Track and Field Championship with 194 points Thursday.

River Valley Coach Heidi McCone was named Tomahawk Girls Track Coach of the year by a vote of all coaches after the meet.

“It was a fun day,” coach McCone said. “Some of our guys missed the meet due to graduation duties, but the kids that showed up really came to perform.

Showing depth in shotput, discus and other events, the Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop (GFW) girls finished third with 115 points. Mankato Loyola-Cleveland was second with 115 points.

Mankato Loyola-Cleveland won the boys meet with 156 points. Wabasso was second at 102 and River Valley third at 90.33.

The meet featured several athletes competing in field events not don’t often include distance runners and weight men.

Noah Christensen of River Valley tied for fourth in the high jump with Dominic Krumwiede of GFW. Christensen was third in the pole vault.

“I’ll do whatever the coaches want me to do to score points,” said Christensen.

Krumwiede won the discus at 148 feet, 3 inches and was second in the shot put at 41 feet, 4 1/2 inches.

A senior, Krumwiede said he plans on playing tight end and wide receiver and studying business management at Rochester Technical School next fall.

“You can often find me fishing on Lake Minnetonka or Lake Koronis and Lake Rice near Paynesville,” said Krumwiede.

“Dominic worked out a lot over the summer. He likes to lift and has really gotten focused,” said GFW discus and shot put coach Bob Vrklan.

GFW freshman Annie Wersal won the discus. She said she’s following in the footsteps of her uncle Casey Wersal, who threw shot put and discus for GFW a few years ago.

“I like the competition and meeting new people in track,” said Annie Wersal, who has the third-best discus throw in Section 2A.

Wersal said she enjoys working on the family farm and showing dairy cattle.

“I feed about 250 baby calves. I’m in FFA, 4-H and the American Dairy Association,” she said.

Marissa Pabst of River Valley won the 800 meters, finished second in the mile and runs relays.

She plans to run cross country and track and study elementary and special education at the University of Minnesota Duluth next fall.

Matt Groebner of River Valley won the 800 and was second in the mile. He plans to run cross country and track at Southwest State University with teammate Noah Christensen next fall.

TOP 5 RESULTS

In the boys 100-meter dash, MCW/BO’s Bear Kosbab placed first (12.07), followed by Wabasso’s Nolan Leopold (12.38), GHEC/T/ML’s Jackson Madsen (12.50), Lester Prairie’s Alex Ross (12.53) and Loyola/Cleveland’s Marshall Jordan (12.64). In the 200, Kosab took first (24.00), followed by Leopold (24.54), River Valley’s Gianluka Fernandez (25.24), GFW’s Garrett Stegeman (25.36) and GFW’s Chris Ruiz (25.57).

In the 400, Andy Ruwersma of Lester Prairie won (53.69), with River Valley’s Noah Christensen (53.91) and Matthew Fernandez (57.52), GFW’s Regie Mattes (58.33) and Wabasso’s Bryson Kampsen (58.33) following. In the 800, River Valley’s Matthew Groebner (2:05.28) placed first, followed by Loyola/Cleveland’s Soren Kelly (2:08.59), Lester Praire’s Nestor Garza Juarez (2:21.99), Loyola/Cleveland’s Jack Green (2:28.02) and GFW’s David Cano (2:29.14).

Kelly won the 1,600 (4:41.03), followed by Groebner (4:52.36), Loyola/Cleveland’s Sam Vetter (5:03.66), Loyola/Cleveland’s TJ Waldron (5:11.71) and Wabasso’s Ty Bernadry (5:25.75). Wabasso’s Andrew Morin won the 3,200 (10:30.47), followed by Vetter (11:01.64), Loyola/Cleveland’s Mitchell Buboltz (11:21.51), River Valley’s Dylan Dewitt (11:49.50) and GFW’s Israel Ajualip (12:27.48).

Winning the 110-meter hurdles was Loyola/Cleveland’s Chase Kijenski (16.77), followed by teammate Casey Fogal (17.66), Wabasso’s Tyson Lightfoot (17.87), GFW’s Easton Taylor (19.01) and River Valley’s Cameron Moore (19.18). In the 300-meter hurdles, Kijenski took first again (43.04), followed by Lightfoot (45.36), Fogal (45.55), Moore (46.43) and Taylor (46.83).

MCW/BO won the 4×100 relay with Lixon Fosberg, Kale Larson, Lucas Larson and Kosbab (46.34), while Wabasso won the 4×200 relay with Zeke Olson, Tavyn Larson, Lightfoot and Leopold (1:38.80). The River Valley 4×400 relay team of Gianluka Fernandez, Christensen and Groebner won (3:39.29), While the Loyola/Cleveland 4×800 relay team of Andrew Tieva, Green, Waldron and Buboltz took first (9:15.97).

In shot put, Lester Prairie’s Logan Meyer won (42-8), followed by GFW”s Dominic Krumwiede (41-4.5), MCW/BO’s Barret Scholl (41-1), Zeke Olson (41-0) and Taylor (40-7), while Krumwiede won the discus (148-3), followed by GFW’s Gabriel Ruiz (118-9), GFW’s Brandon Long (113-0), Meyer (110-8) and MCW/BO’s Hank Olson (110-5).

Kijenski won the high jump (5-11), followed by Lester Prairie’s Alex Ross (5-8) and Ryland Rodriguez (58), Krumwiede (5-6), Christensen (5-6), and GHEC/T/ML’s Aiden Stith (5-6). Loyola/Cleveland’s Brayden Hecksel won the pole vault (12-6), followed by teammate Thayne Remiger (10-6), Christensen (9-0), Loyola/Cleveland’s Luke Kortuem (7-6) and River Valley’s Kody Bast (6-6).

Remiger took first in long jump (18-9.25), followed by Zeke Olson (18-2.5), Tavyn Larson (18-1), Gianluka Fernandez (17-11.5) and GFW’s Garrett Stegeman (17-9.5). Tavyn Larson won the triple jump (39-4.5), with Zeke Olson (38-0), Remiger (36-9.5), Fosberg (35-11.5) and Lester Prairie’s Alex Perez (35-9.5) following.

On the girls side of the meet in the 100, Lester Prarie’s Addison Hoof placed first (13.41), followed by teammate Nakita Stuck (13.99), GFW’s Kinley Bruns (14.26), GHEC/T/ML’s Londyn Bowers (14.37) and River Valley’s Leah Kucera (14.41). In the 200, Stuck placed first (28.36), followed by River Valley’s Marley Hewitt (28.45), Wabasso’s Carly Fenger (29.37), Bowers (29.40) and Bruns (29.40).

Hoof took first in the 400 (59.17), followed by Bruns (1:01.73), Hewitt (1:02.28), Stuck (1:02.36) and River Valley’s Lydia Dauer (1:07.53). River Valley’s Marissa Pabst won the 800 (2:33.41), followed by GFW’s Silvana Ruiz (2:41.43), River Valley’s Ali Almanza (2:46.30), River Valley’s Emmie McCone (2:50.97) and Loyola/Cleveland’s Lily Phillips (2:52.52).

Loyola/Cleveland’s Charlotte Meyer won the 1,600 (5:29.08), followed by Pabst (5:43.47), MCW/BO’s Evelynn Christenson (6:04.54), GFW’s Madyson Steele (6:09.61) and GFWs Lucy Dvorak (6:11.44). Dvorak won the 3,200 (12:45.85), followed by River Valley’s Katie Thram (13:06.13) and Emma Hagen (13:10.58), Steele (13:16.38) and Loyola/Cleveland’s Izzy Endres (13:25.84).

Maddie Huiras of Loyola/Cleveland won the 100-meter hurdles (17.14), with River Valley’s Millie Lax (17.97), Kucera (18.58), Wabasso’s Aaliya Flowers (19.69) and GFW’s Keyden Buboltz (20.56). Huiras won the 300-meter hurdles as well (47.75), with Lax (51.74), Thram (51.78), River Valley’s Olivia Milbrath (53.95) and Buboltz (1:00.60).

River Valley won the 4×100 relay with Yessenia Fernandez, Kenadi Wersal, Yanelli Fernandez and Kucera (55.71), while Loyola/Cleveland won the 4×200 relay with Titoluwani Ehinmowo, Morgan Dimmel, Aubrey Blaschko and Kenna Forster (1:57.21). Hewitt, Yessenia Fernandez, Lydia Dauer and Pabst won the 4×400 relay for River Valley (4:25.94), while McCone, Skyla Dauer, Thram and Lydia Dauer won the 4×800 relay for River Valley (10:53.37).

GFW’s Annie Wersal won the discus (111-5), with Yuridia Fernandez (110-10), GHEC/T/ML’s Lynsie Salic (100-7), Loyola/Cleveland’s Brianna Michels (96-9) and Lester Prairie’s Sophia Vasquez (93-1) following, while Wersal won the shot put (32-6.5), followed by Loyola/Cleveland’s Brianna Michels (29-6.5), Yuridia Fernandez (29-5.75), Loyola/Cleveland’s Allison Jandera (29-2) and Wabasso’s Madelyn Fogelson (28-3).

Kirschner won the high jump (5-0), followed by GFW’s Trinity Stearns (4-10), Milbrath (4-6) and Loyola/Cleveland’s Izzy Endrew (4-6) and Sammy Kann (4-4). Lydia Dauer was the top finisher in pole vault (8-3), followed by Lax (7-6), Ehinmowo (7-6), Julie McCone (6-6) and Loyola/Taryn Hecksel (6-0).

Hewitt won the long jump (14-6.25), followed by Liz Morin (14-3.25), GFW’s Kelby Bruns (13-3.5), Emmie McCone (12-9.5) and Wabasso’s Riley Boerboom (12-8.5), while Flowers won the triple jump (30-7.5), followed by Kucera (30-7.5), Wabasso’s Melany Kramer (30-2), Kann (29-5.5) and Kelby Bruns (29-4).
