Area roundup: Eagles take 2 in St. Cloud

PREP BASEBALL

New Ulm 5, Duluth East 1 (Game 1)

New Ulm 10, St. Cloud Crush 3 (Game 2)

ST. CLOUD — New Ulm won both games it played Friday in a St. Cloud baseball invitational.

In Game 1, Zach Hubbard threw a complete game for New Ulm. He allowed one run on four hits and recorded eight strikeouts.

Tanner Backer led the Eagles at the plate. He was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Cohen Domeier went 2 for 2 with an RBI, while Hubbard went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Tanner Backler picked up the win for the Eagles in Game 2. He went four innings and allowed three runs on six hits and he struck out five batters.

Dirk Haynes and Kyle Albrecht each collected three hits. Cohen Domeier went 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Levi Hopp went 2 for 5 with three RBIs.

New Ulm (7-2) will host Hutchinson at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at New Ulm High School.

Madelia 8, SESM 5

SLEEPY EYE — Madelia edged Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 8-5 on Friday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover baseball game.

Madelia scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Evan Coil wnet 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs for Madelia, while Noel Davila had a hit and two RBIs. Zach Jacobs had two RBIs.

Talan Helget went 2 for 4 with two runs scored for St. Mary’s, while Tyler Mathiowetz went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI. Merrick Mathiowetz had a run scored.

Zach Jacobs earned the win on the mound. He pitched four innings and gave two runs on five hits and he had five strikeouts.

Talen Helget took the loss, going four innings. He gave up six runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks. He struck out five batters.

Heritage Christian 2, Sleepy Eye 1

MAPLE GROVE– Heritage Christian edged Sleepy Eye 2-1 on Friday in a nonconference baseball game.

HC scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning, while Sleepy Eye scored a run in the top of the fourth inning.

Kayden Klein had an RBI and Cody Schultz scored Sleepy Eye’s lone run.

Klein took the loss. He pitched six innings and gave up two runs on seven hits. He struck out five batters and he walked two batters.

GFW 3, MCW 2

FAIRFAX — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop held off Martin County West 3-2 on Friday in a nonconference baseball game.

GFW got the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Owen Swenson went 1 for 3 with a run scored. Layton Uecker-Hamre was 1 for 4 with a run scored, while Kaden Rieke went 1 for 3 with an RBI. Will Bastian went 1 or 3 with an RBI, while Matthew Lee went 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Uecker-Hamre earned the win for GFW. He pitched four innings and gave up no runs on three hits. He had six strikeouts and walked one.

GFW (3-9) will play at Wabasso on Monday.

PREP SOFTBALL

St. Peter 3, New Ulm 2

ST. PETER — St. Peter eked by New Ulm 3-2 on Friday in a Big South Conference softball game.

Ramsey Hopp took the complete-game loss. She allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits. She had eight strikeouts and allowed three walks.

Maddie Backer went 2 for 4 with two stolen bases to lead New Ulm at the plate, while Kenzie Enter, Lauren Schmiesing and Gracie Baker each had doubles. Hopp, Berkley Wilfahrt and Bridgett Roiger each had one hit. Hopp and Schmiesing each had RBIs for the Eagles. Courtesy runner Hadley Batt and Enter scored New Ulm’s two runs.

New Ulm (7-1) will play at Mankato West on Monday.

SEARLES — Martin County West swept Madelia on Friday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Conference softball game.

Kellie Koberoski got Madelia’s lone hit in Game 1. Payton Bruns took the loss. She pitched five innings and gave up 12 runs (10 earned) on 16 hits. She walked one batter.

The Mavericks scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to ice the Game 2 win.

Emily Jacobs took the loss. She went five innings and gave up 12 runs (eight earned) on 12 hits. She struck out three batters and walked four.

Bruns went 2 for 3 with two RBIs to lead Madelia at the plate, while Koberoski went 2 for 3 with one RBI. Lauryn Grev, Alicia Lugo and Emmy Johnson each had one run scored.

USC 8, Nicollet 0

CLEVELAND– United South Central defeated Nicollet on Friday in a nonconference softball game.

Leah Bode went 1 for 3 with a double for the Raiders. Zoie Rengstorf went 1 for 3 with a stolen base.

Bode took the loss. She pitched seven innings and gave up three earned runs on seven hits. She walked four batters and she struck out four.

Nicollet (5-4, 2-1) will host Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey (6-7, 5-4) on Monday.

Redwood Valley 5,

New Ulm 2

REDWOOD FALLS– Redwood Valley defeated New Ulm on Friday in a Big South Conference boys tennis match.

New Ulm’s Isaac Dittmer defeated Yzykiel Rendon 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Wyatt Feucht and Thomas Lehre downed Rick Green and Carlos Martinez at No. 2 doubles 7-5, 6-4.
