Area roundup: Rabbits take down Indians in Tomahawk softball

WABASSO — Aylah Jenniges tossed a complete-game shutout for the No. 7-ranked Wabasso softball team in its Tomahawk Division matchup against No. 4 Sleepy Eye on Thursday.
Jenniges struck out four batters over her seven scoreless innings, giving up three hits and a walk on an efficient 83 pitches.
Audrey Johnson gave the Rabbits the game’s first run with a leadoff single in the bottom of the first. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and a steal, and scored on a passed ball.
The Rabbits also added another run in the frame when Jenniges walked and Carlson scored.
Sara Carlson, Macy Rohlik and Jenniges each drove in a pair of runs for the Rabbits on two singles for Carlson, a triple for Rohlik and a single and a walk for Jenniges. Johnson reached base three times for three runs for Wabasso on a single and two walks.
Rohlik’s triple came in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a run after Johnson walked. Rolhlik then also scored when Carlson reached on an error.
Taylor Berkner pitched for the Indians, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits and eight walks over six innings. She also struck out four batters.
Delaina Eis scored for Wabasso in the second when she walked before eventually scoring on a passed ball.
Jace Schauman, Nora Coulson and Megan Sellner each singled once for Sleepy Eye, with Sellner also drawing a walk.
Wabasso tacked on an additional three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Peyton Jenniges walked and Johnson reached on an error to start the inning, and Aylah Jenniges reached on an error to drive in one run. A Rohlik ground out and a Carlson single then drove in another two to make the score 8-0.
Wabasso (8-3) now heads to Winthrop, where it will take on Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (0-6) on Monday at 5 p.m.
Sleepy Eye (10-2) will look to get back on track when it hosts New Ulm Cathedral (6-2) for its next game on Monday at 5 p.m.

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop continued a suspended softball game on Thursday, playing the final inning of a game that was started on April 10. Springfield won the game 20-1 in four innings.
The game was originally stopped after three innings due to an incorrect ruling about the 15-run rule. MSHSL requires that at least four innings be played before a game can be considered completed.
Jalyn Louwagie earned the win for Springfield, striking out six and allowing one run on two hits. At the plate, Jada Reese was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Emma Hauger was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Makay Winkelmann was 1 for 2 with two RBIs.
Ellison Fitzpatrick took the loss for GFW, striking out one while allowing 20 runs, seven earned, on seven hits and eight walks. At the plate, Ellie Weber had a hit and an RBI, while Micahl Nachreiner had a hit and a run scored.
Springfield and GFW played a second game following the completed game, with Springfield winning 10-6.
Louwagie earned the win for Springfield, striking out two and allowing one run on six hits in 5 1/3 innings. At the plate, Winkelmann was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Abby Groebner was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Regan Beadell had a hit and an RBI, while Teagan Steffl had a hit and two RBIs.
Fitzpatrick took the loss for GFW, striking out four while allowing five earned runs on seven hits. At the plate, Nicole Dehn was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Mady Lee and Hannah Marti had a hit and an RBI. Ashlynn Hubred had two hits and an run scored.
GFW (1-6, 0-6) hosts Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Friday.

SPRINGFIELD — Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove defeated Springfield 9-7 in a nonconference softball game on Thursday.
Regan Beadell took the loss for Springfield, striking out 12 while allowing nine runs, two earned, on six hits and two walks. At the plate, Makay Winkelmann was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Faye Williams was 2 for 4 with four RBIs. Abby Groebner was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
Springfield (4-8) plays in a tournament at Caswell Park in North Mankato on Saturday.

WINTHROP — The New Ulm Cathedral boys golf team won a meet against Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop and Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday, scoring 184 to GFW’s 191.
The Cathedral and GFW girls teams tied with a 253, while both BLHS teams were incomplete.
GFW’s Carson Lee was the medalist for the boys’ meet, scoring a 44. He was followed by Cathedral’s Joe Gillis (44), Owen Strei (45), and Carter Wilson (46) and GFW’s Cole Jacobson (46).
BLHS’s Ava Ahlbrecht won the girl’s side of the meet with a 53, followed by Cathedral’s Elissa Riel (61), GFW’s Abigail Willegal (61), GFW’s Kjerssa Jasinski (62) and Cathedral’s Emma Hoffmann (62).

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye United swept a home golf meet, with the boys scoring 161 to Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s 185 and Springfield’s 189, and the girls scoring a 196 Springfield’s 201 and MVL’s 217.
SEU’s Nola Kucera won the boys’ side of the meet with a 37, followed by SEU’s Josh Sellner (40), Springfield’s Braiden Davis (41), SEU’s Anders Coulson and Blaine Arneson (42), SEU’s Isaac Christensen (43) and MVL’s Philip Lukasek and Nathaniel Lukasek (44).
Springfield’s Ava Lipetzky and SEU’s Kiara Murphy tied for first for the girls with a 45, followed by Springfield’s Mavri Winkelmann (46), SEU’s Sam Price (47), SEU’s Chloe Walter (49), MVL’s Eden Grubbs (51), Springfield’s Annie Kuehn (52) and MVL’s Kara Hinrichsen (53).

Eagles boys take 3rd at Big South East meet
WORTHINGTON — The New Ulm Eagles boys golf team took third out of seven teams at a Big South Conference, East Division meet on Wednesday at the GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness Club, shooting a 160.
Marshall won the meet with a 144, while St. Peter took second with a 159.
Marshall’s Deacon Wing and Luke Ehlers were the co-medalists with a 35.
New Ulm’s Jaxon Buegler shot a 36 to take third, while teammate Brody Wenner shot a 40 for ninth. New Ulm’s Brecken Neuman and Brandt Munson both shot 42s, tying for 13th and rounding out New Ulm’s team score.
