Area roundup: Sleepy Eye baseball, softball win openers
PREP BASEBALL
Sleepy Eye 3, Wabasso 1
WABASSO — Sleepy Eye downed Wabasso 3-1 in a Tomahawk Division baseball game on Thursday.
Cody Schultz earned the win for Sleepy Eye, striking out five while allowing one run on one hit in seven innings. At the plate, Cole Eckstein was 2 for 4 with a run, while Kaden Klein had a triple and an RBI. Landon Wendinger and Carson Uecker each added a hit.
Ethan Jenniges took the loss, striking out three and allowing two runs on two hits and three innings. Jack Burns pitched three innings and struck out seven, allowing no runs and two hits. Jenniges picked up the only hit of the game for Wabasso, with Jayden Remiger scoring a run.
Sleepy Eye (1-0, 1-0) hosts Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Monday. Wabasso (0-1, 0-1) hosts Murray County Central on Monday.

Sleepy Eye 6, Wabasso 4
SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye defeated Wabasso 6-4 in a Tomahawk Division softball game on Thursday.
Taylor Berkner earned the win, striking out 10 while allowing four runs on five hits in a complete game. At the plate for Sleepy Eye, Paige Haala went 2 for 3 with a home run, three RBIs and a run scored. Berkner was 2 for 3 with a double, and Callie Evers hit a two-run home run. Jace Schauman was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
Ayla Jenniges took the loss for Wabasso, striking out seven while allowing six runs on eight hits. Macy Rohlik collected two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Camryn Irlbeck had a hit and a run scored. Peyton Jenniges added a hit and an RBI.
Sleepy Eye (1-0, 1-0) hosts Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Monday, while Wabasso (0-1, 0-1) travels to Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian on Monday.
