Gusties women win first round DIII tourney game in OT
ST. PETER — The No. 5 Gustavus Gusties women’s basketball team earned a 61-49 overtime win over Wisconsin Lutheran in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Friday night on Gus Young Court.
The game was tied at 47-all heading into overtime.
Springfield High School grad and fifth-year Gusties senior Sydney Hauger set the tone of the Gusties early on in the game by scoring her team’s first 8 points in the game. She finished with 14 points, four rebounds and two steals.

Emma Kniefel led the Gusties with 20 points and five rebounds. Rachel Kawiecki got into double figures in the overtime period with back-to-back buckets to put the Gusties up 53-49. Kawiecki’s back-to-back scores ignited a 12-0 run for the Gusties to close the game out and she finished with 10 points. Kylie Baranick added 11 points and six rebounds for Gustavus.
The Gusties move on in the tourney and host Wartburg at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for the chance to advance to the Sweet 16.
