NICOLLET — Nicollet came away with a 50-point win over Medford on Monday night, rolling the Tigers 80-30 in a nonconference girls basketball game.
“I think we were doing a pretty good job of making the extra pass and getting the open shot,” Nicollet’s Leah Bode said. “Going in we knew that we were expected to win the game, but that doesn’t mean we have to stop trying. We still have to play up to our level, not down to theirs.”
Bode led the Raiders with 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Savannah Klockziem had 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Cheyenne Klockziem had 8 points and 16 rebounds, and Jasmyn Goettlicher had 8 points. Nine total Raiders scored in the game.
Medford’s only lead of the game was early in the first, with a 6-3 advantage on a layup from Olivia Ward. From there, Nicollet took a 8-7 lead, then a layup from Bode sparked an 11-1 run, closing on a pair of free throws from Cason Forbrook. A free throw from Bode in the bonus started another run for Nicollet, scoring 11 unanswered as the Raiders took a 30-10 lead on a baseline jumper from Bode. Nicollet entered the double bonus with several minutes left in the first, helping them build a 45-15 lead by halftime.
Nicollet scored 6 of the first 8 points after the break, with a layup from Cheyenne Klockziem, a layup from Bode and a putback by Cheyenne Klockziem putting the Raiders up 48-17. Medford scored the next 5 points, but Nicollet didn’t let up as a running clock was instituted for the final 10 minutes of the game. Savannah Klockziem provided plenty of scoring in the second half to keep the game out of reach for Medford, and one final 3-pointer from Nicollet’s Lydia Martens closed out the game.
Nicollet (15-10) was seeded eighth for the Section 2A girls basketball tournament and will host No. 9 United South Central on Monday.
“Obviously we’re going to have to continue to play hard and play our best,” Bode said. “Run the floor like we know how to, play good defense and then let that transition to our offense.”
