NEW ULM — Usually, when a player scores 20 points in a game, they are the unrivaled scoring leader for their team.
For New Ulm’s game against Tri-City United on Friday, the Eagles had three such scorers, leading them to a 83-65 win in Big South Conference girls basketball action.
Morgan Hulke, Ramsey Hopp and Brooklyn Lewis all crossed the 20-point threshold in the game for New Ulm, with Hulke scoring 27 with four rebounds, Hopp scoring 23 with six rebounds, and Lewis dropping 21 with seven rebounds.
“We’ve had games where we’ve had five kids in double figures, but not this many points from three kids,” New Ulm head coach Julie Rogers said. “That was really nice to see those kids go for that.”
The trio all scored in different ways, with Hulke making seven 3-pointers, Hopp going 10-10 at the line and working off-ball and Lewis getting it done mainly in the paint.
“I think we all had our good games,” Hulke said. “I think the key for us is sharing the ball and swinging the basketball. I think we play the best when we share the ball, which shows when all three of us are in the 20s in scoring. That’s a huge part of our game.”
Hulke, Hopp and Lewis’s nights exemplify the way that the team’s game complements each other, with all members helping the others to shine.
“I think we compliment each other really well,” Hulke said. “It’s kind of like a spark. When one person’s doing good, then the other person’s doing good and we just add on to each other. We feed on each other’s energy, and I think that’s really important for us too.”
Hulke started out the night by scoring 10 of New Ulm’s first 12 points, and when she hit the bench, Lewis picked up with 8 of the Eagles’ next 10 points. New Ulm had built a 22-15 lead by then, then went on a 10-3 run to go up 34-22 after a layup from Hopp.
New Ulm continued to push to end the half, and a 3-pointer by Hulke went in with just seconds left to go up 41-25.
That momentum went away quickly, as TCU scored 13 of the next 16 points to cut the lead down to 44-38.
“I think we have to adjust our play when there’s somebody as tall as that girls that they had on the inside [5-11 Ella Schmeising],” Rogers said. “So I think that it just took us to figure out. How do we hit the seams, where are the open shots, how can we modify our offense so that we can hit those spots. The girls did that. They figured it out, they came out in a zone in the second half, so we switched the offense that we ran and controlled the ball. I was really pleased with how we took care of the ball as we moved it around in that zone defense.”
Lewis got New Ulm going again with a driving layup, keeping the Titans at bay. A 3-pointer by Hulke, then another by Hopp from deep and late in the shot clock gave New Ulm a 57-45 lead.
“I think just sticking to the plan, running the court, that’s our biggest thing,” Hulke said. “Obviously we made a lot of shots, and that really helps. I think our momentum kept going, we never gave up. Just keep it rolling.”
The Eagles stayed hot for the rest of the half, pushing the lead out to 18 on one final 3-pointer from Hulke to close out the game.
