Area roundup: GFW earns first win in 5-set war with Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop got its first win of the season with a 20-25, 25-23, 25-20, 26-28, 15-6 win over Springfield Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball match.
Trinity Stearns had 15 kills and seven blocks for GFW, while Ella Nachreiner had 13 kills and five blocks. Kora Schwarzrock had eight kills, while Cheyenne Schmidt had 18 kills and an ace. Natalie Ahlbrecht had 37 set assists and four aces.
Kendall Krueger led the Tigers with 13 kills and 17 digs, while Lily Pingeon had 10 kills and a block. Emma Hauger had four kills, 16 digs, two aces and a block, while Taylor Roiger had 33 set assists, six digs and four aces. Jasmine Novotny added seven kills, 13 digs and four aces.
GFW (1-15, 1-6) plays in a tournament at Southwest Minnesota State on Friday along with Springfield (2-12-1, 1-6).
PREP VOLLEYBALL
BLHS 3, Wabasso 2
HECTOR — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart scraped by Wabasso 25-23, 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-11 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball match Tuesday.
Alivia Olson led the Rabbits with 17 kills, 10 digs and three blocks, while Camryn Irlbeck had 13 kills and four blocks. Leah Mathiowetz had eight kills and three aces, while Audrey Johnson had 20 digs and an ace. Sara Carlson had 51 set assists, 13 digs and a block.
Wabasso (16-9, 6-1) plays at Red Rock Central on Friday.
Cedar Mountain 3, Lester Prairie 0
LESTER PRAIRIE — Cedar Mountain swept Lester Prairie 3-0 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball match.
Reagyn Kleinschmidt led the Cougars with 13 kills, 12 digs and 10 set assists, while Kendra Erickson had 13 kills, nine set assists and eight digs. Brynn Hoffbeck had 18 digs and Aubrey Steffl had 15 digs.
Cedar Mountain (10-7, 5-2) hosts Red Rock Central on Thursday.
St. Clair 3, Sibley East 0
ARLINGTON — St. Clair swept Sibley East 25-20, 25-21, 25-14 in a South Central Conference volleyball match on Tuesday.
Emme Eccles led the Wolverines with 10 kills, while Rachelle Wear had six kills, eight blocks and an ace. Brianna Kettner had eight kills and let the team in serve-receive rating (2.35), while Olivia Halquist had 24 set assists, nine digs and six blocks.
Sibley East (5-13, 1-7) plays at Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Thursday.

PRIOR LAKE — Prior Lake swept New Ulm 7-0 in a Section 2AA girls tennis meet on Tuesday, ending the Eagles’ season.
Camryn Schotzko put up the best fight for New Ulm, falling to Ada Maunu 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Prior Lake’s Sophia Livingston defated New Ulm’s Karlee Prahl 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Prior Lake’s Ella Brauer downed Natalie Fischer 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Prior Lake’s Haven Fisher and Delaney Dahl defeated New Ulm’s Lilly Kral and Aubrey Demarais 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and New Ulm’s Kaylee Evans and Everly Batt fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles to Makayla Prak and Kaylen Long.
