Area roundup: New Ulm suffers 5-set loss in Blue Earth

BLUE EARTH — Blue Earth Area came back to beat New Ulm in five sets on Tuesday in a Big South Conference volleyball match, winning 17-25, 24-26, 25-22, 25-23, 15-13.
New Ulm was led by Makena Meier’s 15 kills, while Kenzie Enter had 20 set assists and two blocks and Morgan Hulke had 21 digs and two blocks. Brooklyn Lewis had 20 digs also for New Ulm, while Avarey Sellner had three aces.
New Ulm (1-14, 1-2) hosts Waseca on Thursday.

Lester Prairie 0
LESTER PRAIRIE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s swept Lester Prairie 25-19, 25-18, 25-11 on Tuesday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball match.
St. Mary’s was led by Morgan Mathiowetz’s nine kills, while Reese Hoffmann had seven kills and Amelia Schwartz had eight blocks. Brynne Ibberson also had 14 set assists for the Knights in the win, while Josie Helget had nine set assists.
St. Mary’s (7-4, 2-2) is at New Ulm Cathedral for another Tomahawk Division matchup on Thursday.
Cedar Mountain 3, GFW 0
MORGAN — Cedar Mountain swept Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 25-11, 25-18, 25-16 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball match on Tuesday.
Cedar Mountain was led by Reagyn Kleinschmidt and Kendra Erickson, who both had 10 kills apiece. Erickson added 11 set assists and eight digs, while Kleinschmidt added 10 set assists, 12 digs, three blocks and three aces. Aubrey Steffl also had six kills and 12 digs for Cedar Mountain, while Sami Gruendemann had three kills and Brynn Hoffbeck had 11 digs.
GFW was led by Lauren Schafer’s four kills, while Chloe Henrichs and Madi Lee each had three kills. Natalie Ahlbrecht and Keyden Buboltz had two blocks apiece, while Ahlbrecht added 12 digs and 13 set assists and Trinity Stearns had 11 digs.
Cedar Mountain (7-2, 3-0) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart for a Tomahawk Division meeting on Thursday, while GFW (0-6, 0-3) hosts Lester Prairie in a Tomahawk Division matchup on Thursday.
Wabasso 3, Sleepy Eye 0
WABASSO — Wabasso swept Sleepy Eye 25-22, 25-14, 25-23 on Tuesday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball match.
Alivia Olson led the Rabbits with 14 kills, while Leah Mathiowetz had seven kills and two aces, Camryn Irlbeck had five kills and two blocks and Kenley Guetter had five kills and two blocks. Amelia Bootsma added two blocks, while Sara Carlson had 32 set assists and four aces and Audrey Johnson had 14 digs.
Sleepy Eye was led by Sam Price’s nine kills, 10 digs and two aces, while Paige Haala had six kills and two blocks. Destiney Dittbenner added 17 digs, while Ava Kunkel had 15 set assists and two aces.
Sleepy Eye (6-5-1, 1-3) hosts Springfield on Thursday, while Wabasso (13-3, 4-0) is at the Burnsville Showcase this weekend.
Sibley East 3, MVL 1
ARLINGTON — Sibley East defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 25-18 on Tuesday in a South Central Conference volleyball match.
MVL was led by Olivia Hammer’s 18 kills and 11 digs, while Jenna Bates had 13 kills, 18 digs, two aces and two blocks and Avery Freier had 43 set assists. Jessica Meunier added 12 digs and two aces for MVL, while Marley Schauer had eight kills and two blocks.
Sibley East was led by a career-high night in kills from Emme Eccles, who finished the night with 12 kills, while Olivia Halquist had 35 set assists and 12 digs and Brianna Kettner had 10 kills, 15 digs and four aces. Mahrlie Lundgren added six kills and six digs for Sibley East, while Rachelle Wear had five kills and Bridget Biron had eight digs and three aces.
MVL (0-6) hosts St. Clair this Thursday in another conference matchup, while Sibley East (4-6) hosts a tournament beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Loyola 3, Nicollet 0
NICOLLET — Mankato Loyola swept Nicollet 25-19, 25-15, 25-17 on Tuesday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division volleyball match.
Leah Bode led the Raiders with 10 kills, while Cason Forbrook had 10 digs and three aces and Mia Lambrecht had 11 set assists and a block.
Nicollet (1-4, 0-3) is at Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman next on Thursday.
GIRLS SOCCER
New Ulm 10,
Worthington 2
WORTHINGTON — The New Ulm Eagles rolled by Worthington 10-2 on Tuesday night in a Big South Conference crossover girls soccer match.
Julia Dewitt led the Eagles with five goals in the win, improving New Ulm to 5-4 on the year.
New Ulm is at Waseca on Thursday night.

Fairmont 6, New Ulm 1
FAIRMONT — New Ulm fell to Fairmont 6-1 on Tuesday in a Big South Conference girls tennis match.
Karlee Prahl got New Ulm’s lone win of the day in a No. 1 singles battle against Emelia Klanderud. Prahl won 7-5, 4-6, 10-4.
New Ulm hosts Albert Lea on Thursday.
