Area roundup: Greyhounds take down Bulldogs

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds shut out the Lester Prairie Bulldogs in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball match on Thursday.
Shay Wilfahrt led the Greyhounds in their first conference win of the season with 12 kills, three aces and two blocks, while Jaylin Hartness added 10 kills, 14 digs and three aces. Abbey Hillesheim had 17 set assists and two aces, while Madelyn Haala had nine set assists and 10 digs.
Cathedral (4-7, 1-2) hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in another conference-divisional matchup on Thursday.
St. Mary’s 3, Springfield 0
SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s shut out Springfield 25-8, 25-20, 25-17 on Thursday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball match.
Morgan Mathiowetz led the Knights in the win with nine kills, while Reese Hoffmann had eight kills and 11 digs. Josie Helget, who passed 1,000 career set assists for the Knights this past weekend at the Sleepy Eye Public tournament, finished with 11 set assists, while Brynne Ibberson had 14 set assists.
Teagan Steffl led Springfield with seven kills, while Jasmine Novotny had four kills and three digs and Lily Pingeon had four kills. Kendall Krueger added nine digs, while Taylor Roiger had 17 set assists. (No statistics were reported Thursday night when The Journal’s print edition went to press.)
St. Mary’s (6-4, 1-2) is at Lester Prairie on Tuesday night, while Springfield travels to Wabasso for a tournament Saturday.
Wabasso 3, GFW 0
WINTHROP — Wabasso swept Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 25-13, 25-10, 25-21 on Thursday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball match.
Alivia Olson led the Rabbits in victory with 17 kills, eight digs and two aces, while Sara Carlson had 30 set assists, three blocks and two set assists and Camryn Irlbeck had three blocks. Leah Mathiowetz added three ace serves for the Rabbits, while Kenley Guetter had two aces and Audrey Johnson had six digs.
Trinity Stearns and Kora Schwarzrock each had four kills for GFW, while Natalie Ahlbrecht had 10 set assists and two blocks and Madi Lee had three blocks. Stearns also had two blocks, while Cheyenne Schmidt had six digs.
Wabasso (9-0, 3-0) hosts a tournament on Saturday, while GFW (0-5) is at Cedar Mountain on Tuesday.
LSH 3, MVL 1
LE SUEUR — Le Sueur-Handerson held off Minnesota Valley Lutheran in four sets Thursday, winning 25-17, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 in a South Central Conference matchup.
Jenna Bates had 15 kills, 12 digs, five blocks and four aces to lead MVL, while Marley Schauer had eight kills and two blocks and Olivia Hammer had eight kills, seven digs, an ace and a block. Avery Freier had 31 set assists, nine digs and an ace also for the Chargers, while Jessica Meunier had 13 digs.
MVL (0-5) is at Sibley East on Tuesday.
BLHS 3, Sleepy Eye 0
SLEEPY EYE — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart swept Sleepy Eye 25-18, 25-7, 25-17 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball match on Thursday.
Sam Price led the Indians with eight kills, while Hannah Meyer had 10 set assists and 10 digs. Jaelynn Schauman added three blocks for Sleepy Eye.
Sleepy Eye (5-4-1, 1-2) hosts Red Rock Central on Monday.
Alden-Conger 3, Madelia 0
ALDEN — Alden-Conger swept Madelia 25-13, 25-9, 25-11 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division volleyball match on Thursday.
Ashlynn Sweet had 10 kills for the Blackhawks, while Lauryn Grev had three kills and 11 digs. Katie Bocock had eight digs and four set assists, while Alicia Lugo had seven set assists and three digs.
Madelia (3-6-1, 1-2) travels to Mankato Loyola on Thursday.
PREP CROSS COUNTRY
Springfield girls take third at Worthington meet
WORTHINGTON — The Springfield girls took third place and the boys team took fourth place during a prep cross country meet Thursday in Worthington.
Marissa Pabst paced the girls team, running a 21:06 to place fifth. Katie Thram ran a 21:42 to place 12th, while Lydia Dauer placed 17th with a 22:00. Emmie McCone finished 24th with a 23:09, and Sylvia Hovland placed 28th with a 23:40.
Matthew Groebner took fifth place to lead the boys team, running a 17:06, while Dylan Dewitt took 29th place with an 18:29. Bryan Buerkle placed 36th with an 18:57, and Luka Fernandez took 40th with a time of 19:27.
GIRLS TENNIS
Waseca 6, New Ulm 1
NEW ULM — Waseca defeated New Ulm 6-1 in a Big South Conference girls tennis meet on Thursday.
Karlee Prahl defeated Takya Schoenrock 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles for New Ulm’s only point of the day. No other New Ulm players won a set in the match.
New Ulm hosts a tennis jamboree on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
