Montevideo Tournament
MONTEVIDEO — Audrey Johnson passed 1,000 career digs for her career on Saturday and the Wabasso Rabbits rolled to a first-place finish in the Montevideo Tournament, defeating Renville County West in the title game.
Wabasso beat Edgerton (25-18, 25-9), Dawson-Boyd (26-24, 25-12), Paynesville (28-27, 25-13) and RCW (12-25, 25-20, 15-13).
Johnson finished the tourney with 31 digs, eight assists and six aces. Alivia Olson had 29 total kills, 15 digs, six aces and six blocks in the tourney also for Wabasso, while Leah Mathiowetz had 16 kills and five aces and Camryn Irlbeck and Carly Fenger each had 13 kills. Sara Carlson also had 81 set assists, 17 digs and five aces in the tournament for the Rabbits, while Fenger added 10 blocks, Irlbeck added eight blocks and Britta Brand had 11 digs.
Wabasso is now 7-0 overall and hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Tuesday night.
BLHS wins Sleepy Eye tourney
SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye High School hosted a volleyball tournament, taking third overall on Saturday.
In pool play, Sleepy Eye defeated Mountain Lake Area 25-12, 25-18 and won a total-points tiebreaker with Madelia 20-25, 25-16. Sleepy Eye tied with Minnesota Valley Lutheran (26-24 SE win, 27-25 MVL win) and got 1.5 points to their tourney pool play point total, which gave them first place in Pool A and gave Sleepy Eye a playoff match with Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s, the runner-up in Pool B. St. Mary’s ended up winning 25-23, 25-21, moving on to a championship game against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart, who won 25-18, 25-19.
The tournament had two sets each game, with tiebreakers decided on point differentials. The winners of each pool game received 2 points to their tourney total, which determined the semifinals.
Sleepy Eye leaders in the tourney were Sam Price (34 kills, 12 digs, two aces), Nora Coulson (17 kills, 29 digs, six aces), Paige Haala (11 kills, 11 digs, two aces), Kayla Hecht (20 kills, 20 digs), Hannah Meyer (45 set assists, 12 digs, four aces) and Ava Kunkel (34 set assists, two aces).
Madelia finished 1-1-1 in the tourney to move to 2-5-1 on the year. Madelia leaders in the tourney were Ashlynn Sweet (14 kills, 11 digs, five blocks, four aces), Makayla Sorenson (14 kills, 16 digs), Katherine DeVlaeminck (7.5 blocks), Katie Bocock (17 set assists, 10 digs) and Payton Bruns (17 digs, six aces).
No other statistics/results were reported from the tournament.
Cathedral goes 1-4 at WEM tourney
WATERVILLE — New Ulm Cathedral competed in a tough volleyball tournament at Waterville-Elysian-Morristown on Saturday, going 1-4 on the day.
Three losses for the Class A Greyhounds came to Class AA opponents as they fell to Nova Classical Academy, Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial and WEM. Cathedral did defeat Class AA Fairmont 2-0 but ended the tourney with a loss to Cleveland.
Shay Wilfahrt led Cathedral on the day with 36 kills and 26 digs, while Ava Krueger had 27 kills and 19 digs, Jaylin Hartness had 21 kills and 25 digs and Madelyn Haala had 70 set assists and 36 digs.
Cathedral travels to take on Cedar Mountain Tuesday night.
Cedar Mountain goes 3-1 Maple River tourney
MAPLETON — Cedar Mountain went 3-1 at the Maple River Tournament on Saturday, falling to Maple River (19-25, 25-23, 15-12) and defeating Sibley East (25-14, 25-23), St. Charles (25-13, 25-20) and Martin County West (25-18, 21-25, 15-10).
Reagyn Kleinschmidt finished with 36 kills and 37 set assists to lead the Cougars in the tourney, while Brynn Hoffbeck had 51 digs.
Cedar Mountain is now 5-1 on the year.
BOYS SOCCER
New Ulm 8, Hutchinson 0
HUTCHINSON — New Ulm shut out Hutchinson 8-0 on Saturday in a nonconference boys soccer game.
Jackson Ocampo scored the first goal with an assist from Daniel Brownfield with 39:37 left in the first half, while Josh Shaneman scored with an assist from Jackson with 35:36 left in the first half to give New Ulm a 2-0 lead. Nicholas Del Castillo Diez scored with an assist from Daniel Brownfield with 27:39 left in the first half, while Methodius Amoah scored with an assist from Logan Goblirsch with 15:33 left in the first half for a 4-0 lead.
In the second half, Ocampo scored with an assist from Josh Shaneman with 36:28 left for a 5-0 lead. Shaneman scored on a penalty kick with Amoah assisting with 26:20 left in the game for a 6-0 lead before Michael Hames scored on an assist from Tegan Kral with 17:59 left to play. Jace Lohman put the final goal in for New Ulm on an assist from Logan Enter with 10:30 left to play.

GFW 14, JWP 7
JANESVILLE — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop bounced back after a season-opening loss to take down Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 14-7 on Friday in a Mid Southeast District, West Subdistrict football game.
Owen Swenson led GFW with 101 yards rushing and a touchdown, while Regie Mattes had 15 carries for 59 yards and a score and Garrett Stegeman had 10 carries for 43 yards. Swenson also led the defense with eight total tackles, while Dominic Krumwiede added three tackles, a sack and two tackles for a loss.
GFW hosts Medford this coming Friday.

RTR 28, Wabasso 0
TYLER — Russell-Tyler-Ruthton shut out Wabasso 28-0 on Friday night in a South District, West-South Subdistrict football game.
RTR had two touchdowns on special teams, with one coming on a punt return and another on a kick return.
Kaysen Harms had 38 yards on five carries for Wabasso, while Sam Zeug had seven carries for 36 yards and Calvin Hanna had 16 carries for 29 yards. Wabasso quarterback Jack Burns completed 3 of 13 passes for 12 yards and two interceptions, while Drew Kemp completed 3 of 3 passes for 27 yards. Nolan Leopold added two catches for 28 yards for the Rabbits.
Caden Frericks led Wabasso on defense with six tackles, while Zach Skoblik added three tackles and a sack.
Wabasso is at Sleepy Eye United this coming Friday night.
