Marti, Team 8B win 18th annual B&L Classic
NEW ULM — The 18th annual B&L Golf Classic on Monday saw the team of Kyle Marti, Jackie Schuetzle, Rick Hulke, Eldon Jones and Jeff Ferrell turn in a score of 125 to take first at the New Ulm Country Club.
The team, 8B, took home $140 cash and $180 shop credit each with the win.
“Team came together really well,” Marti said. “Classic winning formula, right? When one person was down, there was always another to pick it up. We sunk putts when we needed to and the ball went where it was suppose to.”
With limited wind and rising temperatures throughout the day, a high of 88 degrees, things got tougher as the day went on for most teams, but Marti said the team got their shots where they needed and when they needed.
“Like anything, the heat kind of gets to everybody,” Marti said. “Towards the end of the day, getting a little hotter and the chips that were probably a little easier started getting a little more difficult with the heat. But we were lucky they fell when they did.”
Marti said this was the second time he’s competed at the B&L Classic after playing last year. He credited his teammates and the team’s overall putting in securing the win.
“My game isn’t carrying anybody [laughs], but we putted really well,” Marti said. “There was a lot of 5-, 10-, 12-foot putts that went in and those are the difference between tournament [win] or not.”
Taking second in the Classic with a score of 126 was the team of Jack Michel, Hunter Bode, Jerry Boddy, Garrett Freeman and Curtis Hartig, while the team of Monte Mildenberg, Tom Steinbach, Tom Portner, Mari Hort and Tom Schaefer took third with a 126. In fourth with a 127 was the team of Andrew Pettis, Nick Metzker, Bruce Hendrycks, Gene Voges and Randy Wiltscheck. Pettis also won the 100-yard chip shot contest that won him a Blackstone Grill, courtesy of Runnings.
In fifth with a 128 was the team of Jamie Mettler, Patrick Bakken, Terry Steinbach, Don Olson and Kelli Johnson, while the team of Dan Ibberson, Ryan Dorn, Corey Hillesheim, Brian Dienken and Dave Christiansen shot a 131 for sixth. Randy Paa, Paul Roberts, Brent Reinarts, Kevin Loverude and Bob Fisch teamed to shoot a 131 for seventh, while the team of Jackson Ahlness, Jordan Schneider, Dean Warta, Keith Jones and Jeff Schone turned in a 131 for eighth.
