Region 2C Saturday roundup: Longhorns charge back, upset No. 2 Orioles

Stark 6, Leavenworth 4

SLEEPY EYE — The No. 7 Stark Longhorns scored five unanswered runs to take down the No. 2 Leavenworth Orioles 6-4 on Saturday night at Sleepy Eye Ballpark in the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament.

Tim Seifert led the Longhorn bats, going 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Dylan Klein was 3 for 5 and Sean Mathiowetz was 2 for 4. Nick Labat, Brandon Helget and Talan Helget each added an RBI for Stark.

Klein got the win in two innings of relief for Adam Sellner, allowing three hits and a walk for no runs while striking out one. Sellner went seven innings and allowed three earned runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out six.

Caden Evers was 4 for 5 with a double and an RBI to lead Leavenworth, while Jackson Huiras and Dylan Hillesheim each went 2 for 4, with Huiras doubling and adding two RBIs. Jevan Richert was 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI also for the Orioles.

Huiras pitched eight innings in a no decision, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits and three walks while fanning four. Brandon Schmitz entered in the ninth and took the loss, allowing one hit and one walk for two runs, none earned.

Huiras’s two-run double highlighted the third inning for the Orioles that put them up 4-1. The Orioles maintained that lead until the seventh inning when Stark struck for five hits and three runs, led by a pair of RBI singles from Helget and Seifert. The Longhorns took the lead in the top of the ninth after an error allowed two runs to score.

Stark moves on in the winners’ bracket and will play Courtland at 7 p.m. this coming Saturday in New Ulm at Johnson Park, with the winner qualifying for state. Leavenworth dropped to an elimination bracket game in New Ulm with the loss (vs. Sleepy Eye, 4:30 p.m., Sunday, July 28).

Hanska 5, Springfield 2

SLEEPY EYE — After the Springfield Tigers’ scored two to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third over the Hanska Lakers on Saturday, the Lakers made that lead short-lived as they plated four in the fourth and held on for a 5-2 win in the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament at Sleepy Eye Ballpark.

Aaron Portner and Alex Stresemann each were 1 for 3 with an RBI for Hanska, while Derek Wilfahrt went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and Cooper Olson was 1 for 2.

Sam Knowles went 7 1/3 innings on the mound for the Lakers, allowing seven hits and two walks for two earned runs while striking out seven to earn the win. Portner got the 1 2/3-inning save, allowing no hits, walks or runs and striking out one.

Ryan Sturm led the Tigers’ bats, going 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Jordan Milbrath and Luke Boyle each had a double.

Justin Haugo took the loss in six innings, allowing six hits and a walk for five earned runs while striking out six. Jakob Nachreiner pitched the final three innings, allowing one hit and two walks for no runs.

The win moves Hanska on to a meeting with the New Ulm Brewers at 4:30 p.m. this coming Saturday in New Ulm, with the winner earning a state tournament berth. Springfield dropped to an elimination game in New Ulm with the loss (vs. Gibbon, 11 a.m., Sunday, July 28).

Courtland 2, Lamberton 1

SLEEPY EYE — The third-seeded Courtland Cubs held off the sixth-seeded Lamberton Long Sox 2-1 on Saturday at Sleepy Eye Ballpark in a Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament game.

Teddy Giefer got the mound win for Courtland in six innings of work, while Jaden Drill earned a save.

Eli Fest took the loss on the mound for Lamberton.

No other statistics were provided.

Courtland will play Stark in a 7 p.m. winners’ bracket game this coming Saturday in New Ulm, with the winner qualifying for state. Lamberton fell to an elimination bracket game in New Ulm against St. James with the loss (7 p.m., Sunday, July 28).
