St. James earns walk-off win over Madelia in elimination finals

SLEEPY EYE — Madelia Junior Legion fell to St. James 3-2 in the elimination bracket finals of the DII Junior Legion Southwest Sub-Sub State Baseball Tournament Monday at Sleepy Eye Ballpark.

Evan Coil took the loss, striking out three while allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits. At the plate, Tony Zaleski was 3 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI while Tate Becker was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Madelia committed two errors in the game, with both leading to runs scored. Madelia also struggled on rundowns defensively, forcing two but not getting an out on either.

St. James was the first to score, getting a run on an error during a rundown in the second inning. Madelia responded in the third, with Zaleski driving in Noel Davila with a two-out triple, followed by an RBI single by Becker. St. James continued the momentum on defense, with Coil getting three outs on three pitches in the bottom of the inning.

St. James tied the game up in the fourth, with a double, a balk and a groundout getting a runner home. Two scoreless innings followed, including a three-up, three-down inning by the Madelia defense in the fifth. St. James put a runner on first on an error in the bottom of the seventh. After a pair of steals, St. James got a hit from Bodi Parker to walk off the game and get a 3-2 win.

St. James advanced to play Sleepy Eye in the championship game later in the day.
