Bluejays upset unbeaten-in-TEL Brewers

NEW ULM — Hunter Lewandowski’s bases-loaded walk in the top of the ninth scored Nick Stadick from third to break an 8-8 tie in Wednesday night’s Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game at Johnson Park.
Then in the bottom of the ninth, Essig left-hander Zach Riederer struck out New Ulm’s Andrew Peters with the bases loaded and two outs as the Bluejays stunned the New Ulm Brewers 9-8 Wednesday night at Johnson Park.
Riederer got the win for Essig, who improves to 5-8 in the Tomahawk East League.
Colton Schaefer was charged with the loss for the Brewers, who fall to 11-1 in TEL play.
Isaac Lendt led Essig with three hits, with Jay Helget and Lewandowski each adding two hits.
Lewandowski, Lendt and Jake Stadick each drove in two RBIs for Essig.
Trevor Nissen had three hits for New Ulm, with Josh Seidl adding two hits and three RBIs.
New Ulm trailed Essig 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning before they erupted tor six runs.
A Nissen double made it 5-3 before a Sam Keckeisen sacrifice fly pulled the Brewers to within 5-4. A walk to Logan Mielke tied the game before Josh Seidl’s bases-loaded triple moved the Brewers to an 8-5 lead.
But Essig struck for three runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game.
Then in the top of the ninth, Essig’s Nick Stadick and Riederer singled and a one-out intentional walk to Ben Alfred loaded the bases. Lewandowski then coaxed a free pass for a 9-8 lead.
New Ulm loaded the bases with two outs, but Riederer held on for the win for the Bluejays.
New Ulm hosts Courtland Thursday night at Johnson Park for “Military Appreciation Night” at 7:30 p.m., while Essig hosts Springfield at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The Brewers’ game at home with Fairmont on Friday has been cancelled.
