SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s senior Mark Anderson was awarded last Thursday with the first-ever Joe Mauer Award at the Minnesota High School Coaches Association All-Star Banquet at Canterbury Park Expo Center in Shakopee.

Anderson, a three-sport athlete at St. Mary’s, just finished his senior year of baseball as one of the team’s go-to pitchers and posted a 1.22 ERA.

The award criteria for the Joe Mauer Award is as followed:

1. Must have competed in a Fall, Winter, and Spring, MSHSL sanctioned sport for at least their Sophomore, Junior, and Senior seasons. If an injury prevented them from competing in one sport season during those years, they would still be eligible.

2. Besides being recognized for their excellence in baseball, this athlete’s career in their other sports should be highlighted.

3. Coaches need to list the honors and awards the nominee received in each of the three sports.

4. A note on the nomination form from the head baseball coach, describing the character of the player, and the impact they have had in baseball and the other two sports that they played.

5. Any MSHSL violations during their High School athletic career will eliminate them from consideration.

6. All Joe Mauer Award nominations must be completed by June 1 to be considered by the MSHSBCA Selection Committee.

7. The Joe Mauer Award will be presented during the MSHSBCA/Twins Community Fund All-Star Series Banquet.

Starting at $4.38/week.
