Area roundup: Pearson leads area boys golfers in 2A tourney

NORTH MANKATO — Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s Ben Pearson, Sleepy Eye United’s Anders Coulson, and Cedar Mountain’s Carson Schiller advanced to the next round of sections after scoring in the top seven at the Section 2A Boys Golf Tournament Tuesday at North Links Golf Course.

Martin County West’s Hunter Schmidt won the meet, shooting a 70. Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton placed first in the meet with a 306, with Jeffery Simonson and Logan Thiel shooting a 76 to tie for second and Steven Dimmel and Alex James tying for fifth with a 77. Pearson also shot a 76 to tie for second, while United South Central’s Kadyn Neubauer, Couslon, Schiller, and JWP’s Carter Miller tied for seventh with an 82.

New Ulm Cathedral’s Owen Strei, USC’s Brennan Olson and SEU’s Kaleb Weiss tied for 11th with an 83, while Cathedral’s Will Marti and Springfield’s Ben Potter tied for 14th with an 84.

USC was second at the meet with a 341, followed by Cathedral (343) and SEU (343). In addition to JWP, these three teams qualify for the next round of sections also.

Springfield’s Braiden Davis shot an 85 to tie for 16th, while teammate Easton Jensen shot an 86 to tie for 18th with MVL’s Nathaniel Lukasek. Cathedral’s Ben Blomberg shot an 87 to tie for 21st, while Cedar Mountain’s Ryan Kevelin and Blake Schueller shot an 88, SEU’s Nolan Kucera shot an 89, Cathedral’s Joey Fingland shot an 89 and SEU’s Josh Sellner shot an 89 to tie for 25th.

All golfers listed above advance to Monday’s final round. Qualifying standards to get to that final meet include the top four teams, the next best five individuals not on those teams and those within five strokes of the fifth-best individual not on an advancing team.

Monday’s final round will be held at North Links on Monday. The top team will advance to state, along with the next best five individual golfers not on that team.

PREP BASEBALL

Madelia 7, Sleepy Eye 0

SLEEPY EYE — Sixth-seeded Madelia upset third-seeded Sleepy Eye 7-0 on Tuesday in the second round of the Section 2A Baseball Tournament.

Tate Becker earned the complete-game shutout for Madelia, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out eight. He also went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, while Tony Zaleski was 2 for 4 with a homer, a double and two RBIs.

Austin Uecker led the Indians at the plate in defeat, going 2 for 3 with a double. Winsten Nienhaus took the loss in 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and two walks for five earned runs while striking out four.

Madelia will be at second-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s for a 7 p.m. game on Thursday, while Sleepy Eye hosts Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther at 5 p.m. Thursday in elimination play.

St. Mary’s 7, MCW 0

SLEEPY EYE — Second-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s shut out Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 7-0 on Tuesday in the second round of the Section 2A Baseball Tournament.

Brandon Schmitz got the complete-game shutout, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out 12. Jonny Petermann was 2 for 3 with a homer and five RBIs to lead St. Mary’s, while Talan Helget was 2 for 3. Tyler Mathiowetz had a double and an RBI, while George Schwint doubled.

St. Mary’s hosts Madelia at 7 p.m. Thursday in a winner’s bracket game.

PREP SOFTBALL

USC 1, Springfield 0

NORTH MANKATO — United South Central ended Springfield’s season on Tuesday with a 1-0 shutout win in the elimination bracket of the Section 2A Softball Tournament.

Brooklyn Sturm and Ella Gies had Springfield’s lone hits in the game on singles. Jalivia Richert took the loss in six innings, allowing four hits and three walks for one earned run while striking out five.

Springfield finishes the season 16-9.

Wabasso 11, LQPV 4

Wabasso 10, Edgerton 4

MARSHALL — Wabasso won two games on Tuesday night to earn a trip back to the Section 3A Softball Tournament finals.

Edgerton eliminated Wabasso in the 3A finals last season, and Wabasso got payback Tuesday. After defeating Lac qui Parle Valley 11-4 to earn an elimination bracket finals game against Edgerton, the Rabbits defeated Edgerton 10-4 to earn a trip the Section 3A finals on Thursday.

The Rabbits will need to defeat Russell-Tyler-Ruthton twice on Thursday to earn a trip to state, while RTR needs just one win. The first and possibly final game begins at 4 p.m.

In the win over LQPV, Wabasso was led by Annabelle Struntz, who was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, while Audrey Johnson was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Avery Carlson got the complete-game win, allowing four hits and five walks for three earned runs while striking out six.

In the win over Edgerton, Johnson led the way at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Carlson again got the complete-game win, allowing five hits and three walks for one earned run while striking out two.
