Area roundup: RRC/WWG ends St. Marys’ season

SLEEPY EYE — No. 9-seeded Red Rock Central/Westrbook-Walnut Grove eliminated No. 8-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s with an 8-4 win in the opening round of the Section 2A Softball Tournament.

Taylor Mathiowetz took the loss for the Knights, striking out five while allowing eight runs on nine hits and five walks. Josie Helget got on base in every plate appearance on the night, tripling while drawing two walks. Reese Hoffmann was 2 for 3, while Addie Hoffman and Alexa Pelzel each had a double.

St. Mary’s finishes its season with a 9-10 overall record.

Madelia 4, JWP 1

JANESVILLE — No. 11-seeded Madelia upset No. 6-seeded Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 4-1 in the opening round of the Section 2A Softball Tournament Wednesday.

Corban Tatro got the win for the Blackhawks, striking out 10 while allowing one run on five hits and no walks in a complete game. At the plate, Tatro was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Madelyn Lehman was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Makayla Sorenson was 1 for 3 with two run scored.

Madelia will play No. 3 Martin County West on Thursday.

MVL finishes ninth in Day 1 of Section

3AA meet

BUFFALO LAKE — Minnesota Valley Lutheran finished ninth out of 15 teams in the first day of the Section 3AA Girls Golf Tournament on Wednesday at Oakdale Golf Club, while New Ulm placed 12th.

Minnewaska Area took first with a 333 and advances to Day 2 as a team along with Redwood Valley (392), New London-Spicer (396), Fairmont (404) and Marshall (407). MVL scored a 429, while New Ulm scored 442.

Redwood Valley’s Mila Jenniges and Kimball Area’s Mavery Maus tied for first in the meet With a 78. MVL’s Jorga Brown placed 18th with a 97 to advance to Day 2, as did MVL’s Mackenzie Merseth (T-20th, 98) and New Ulm’s Elyse Dreckman (T-25, 101). New Ulm’s Sophia Cooke tied for 34th with a 106, while MVL’s Gabbie Bleick tied for 49th with a 113. New Ulm’s Brooklyn Hagberg tied for 54th with a 115, and New Ulm’s Rory Gieseke and MVL’s Eden Grubbs tied for 63th with a 120.

Day 2 will continue Wednesday at Oakdale Golf Club.

Rohlik advances to

Day 2 in 3A tourney

WORTHINGTON — Wabasso’s Chloe Rohlik scored a 115 to tie for 13th and advance to the second day of the Section 3A Girls Golf Tournament Wednesday at Great Life Golf Club.

Wabasso’s Kylei Winkinson scored a 125 to tie for 29th, while Shayna Huhnerkoch scored a 126 to placed 31st.

Day 2 continues Wednesday at Great Life Golf Club.

Madelia girls take 2nd in conference tourney

MADELIA — The Madelia girls golf team placed second out of six teams while the boys placed fourth in the Valley Conference Golf Tournament on Wednesday.

St. Clair led the girls with a 404, followed by Madelia (462), Alden-Conger (504) and Martin County West (561). Lake Crystall Wellcome Memorial and Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther were incomplete.

LCWM led the boys with a 321, followed by MCW (353), Alden-Conger (353), Madelia (361), St. Clair (387) and T/GHEC/ML (390).

St. Clair’s Celia Johnson was the medalist for the girls meet with a 95, followed by St. Clair’s Rachel Ammann (96), Adyson Fox (100), Madelia’s Dahlia Schmidt (106) and Madelia’s Katie Bocock (109).

MCW’s Hunter Schmidt was the medalist for the boys, scoring a 70. Madlelia’s Cross Schmidt tied for seventh with an 86, while Laiken Melzer and Josiah DeMaris tied for 14th with a 91.
