SLEEPY EYE — Just like they have been all season, the Minnesota Valley Lutheran boys and River Valley girls teams won their sides of the meet in the Tomahawk Conference Track and Field Tournament on Thursday at Sleepy Eye High School, becoming conference champions.

The River Valley girls won the event for the second year in a row.

The MVL/NUC boys finished with a 123 team score, followed by Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (76), River Valley (52) and Wabasso. The River Valley girls scored a 105, followed by MVL/NUC (67), GFW (64) and Wabasso (53).

“Today’s a good day,” MVL/NUC’s Will Kaesermann said. “Beautiful weather. I heard from the other guys that there’s lots of [personal records] today, and I think that helped our team do very well.”

Kaesermann helped lead the Charger boys, setting personal records in the 110-meter hurdles (15.43) and the 300-meter hurdles (42.99) while also winning the triple jump (39-6).

“It feels good to keep PR-ing,” he said. “I think I’ve progressively grown better, and seeing me PR this late in the season and keep peaking is a good thing this time of year.”

The MVL/NUC boys aren’t done with the season yet, however, as they have the True Team state track and field meet on Saturday, the first time the team has gone to the meet since 2016.

“It’s definitely a new thing for our group,” Kaesermann said. “It will be a new experience and I think it will be fun to compete against difference schools.”

Also for the MVL/NUC boys, Josh Bentler won the 100 (11.41) and got a PR to win the 200 (23.33), while Jaden Helget placed second in the 100 (11.60). Justin Thompson placed second in the 400 (53.14) and Kendrick Henry placed third (24.57). Elliot Hoffman placed second in the 800 (2:14.29) and second in the 1,600 (4:41.41).

Jeremy Feistner took third in both the 1,600 (5:09.88) and 3,200 (10:59.99) while Benjamin Rossow took second in discus (124-3) and third in shot put (39-10). Ethan Schauland placed second in pole valut (9-6) and third in high jump (5-4), tying with teammate Micah Horak, while Jaden Helget won the pole vault (10). Ben Halvorson won the long jump (19-11.5) and took second in the triple jump (39-6) and Trace Gunderson placed third in the triple jump (37-3.5).

The MVL/NUC boys relay teams did very well as well, with the 4×100 relay team of Helget, Jared Frey, Halvorson and Benter (44.87), the 4×200 relay team of Thompson, Kendrick Henry, Frey and Gunderson (1:35.53) both placing first while the 4×400 relay team of Thompson, Frey, Hoffman and Kaesermann (3:42.84) and the 4×800 relay team of Tyler Fischer, Griffin Deterlin, Glawe and Vee (9:29.10) both placing second.

On the girls side of the meet, Hailey Hollar was instrumental in River Valley’s win. She took first in the 100 (12.73), 200 (26.44) and long jump (16-2) while taking the 4×200 relay team to a first place finish (1:48.10) along with Yessenia Fernandez, Brynne Ibberson and Marley Hewitt.

“It’s really good,” Hollar said. “Conference is our last meet before we start subsections, so it’s a good start to try and get focused on the postseason and try to get locked in for playoffs.”

Hollar didn’t set any personal records herself, but she hopes to see her times improve for a repeat state tournament run after reaching in several events last year.

“I had a good jump,” Hollar said. “I think I was seven inches off of my PR for long jump. In the 100, I’m probably not going to PR until state. Better competition, so I’m excited for that. Hopefully I get to run into some competition for subsections, but so far it’s been a pretty good day. Got under 13 second for the 100 too, which is always good.”

Also for the River Valley Girls, Ibberson placed first in the 400 (1:00.51) while Marissa Pabst won the 1,600 (5:39.11) and Olivia Milbrath won the 3,200 (13:12.91) and took second in high jump (4-6). Leah Kucera placed first in the triple jump (32-1) and third in the 100-meter hurdles (17.76) and Millie Lax placed first in the 300-meter hurdles (50.39) and third in pole vault (6-6). Along with the 4×200 relay team, the 4×100 relay team of Yessenia Fernandez, Kucera, Erica Wells and Marley Hewitt (52.36), the 4×400 relay team of Lydia Dauer, Ibberson, Pabst and Hewitt (4:16.84) and the 4×800 relay team of Liana Kimbrough, Katie Thram, Emmie McCone and Pabst (11:00.89). Yuridia Fernandez placed third in shot put (29-6.5) and Dauer placed second in pole vault (7-0).
