Cathedral 5, St. Mary’s 3 (Game 1)

Cathedral 17, St. Mary’s 3 (Game 2, 4 innings)

NEW ULM — Cathedral won a tight Game 1 against Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 5-3 before running past St. Mary’s 17-3 in Game 2 of a Tomahawk Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday.

Cathedral was led in Game 1 by Alexa Hornick, who went 2 for 2 with a double and a home run, while Jaylin Hartness went 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

Abbey Hillesheim was the winning pitcher, going seven innings and giving up three runs on eight hits and one walk and striking out one.

St. Mary’s was led by Alexa Pelzel ,who went 2 for 3 with a home run, while Jasmine Petermann went 2 for 3. Taylor Mathiowetz was the losing pitcher, going 4 2/3 innings while allowing eight hits and six walks.

In Game 2, Margo Finstad led Cathedral in hitting, going 2 for 2 with a double, a home run and three RBIs, while Hornick went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Jenna Hotovec had a home run and three RBIs.

Jayde Altermatt was the winning pitcher for Cathedral,going four innings and giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out five.

Adelinde Hoffmann led the Knights in Game 2, going 2 for 3 with a double, while Mathiowetz went 2 for 2.

Natalie Zarn was the losing pitcher, going 2 1/3 innings and giving up seven runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out one.

Cathedral (6-0, 6-0) will travel to Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Thursday in a doubleheader, while St. Mary’s (2-4, 2-4) will travel Minnesota Valley Lutheran Thursday in a doubleheader.

Nicollet 18, GHEC/ML/T 3

NICOLLET — Nicollet beat Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther/Truman 18-3 in a Valley Conference softball game on Tuesday.

Nicollet was led by Jazmyn Goettlicher who went 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs, while Madison Kettner went 2 for 2 having four RBIs. Lydia Martens went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs.

Leah Bode got the win, going four innings and giving up one run on three hits and three walks while striking out five.

Nicollet travels to Martin County West on Thursday.

LCWM 5, MCW 0

LAKE CRYSTAL — Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial beat Martin County West 5-0 in a Valley Conference softball game on Tuesday.

Sydney Kramer led the Knights, going 2 for 3 with two doubles.

Avery Voges got the win giving up no runs on five hits and striking out 16.

LCWM (7-0, 3-0) will travel to Madelia on Thursday, while MCW (4-3, 2-1) will play Nicollet on Thursday.

PREP BASEBALL

GFW 20, Lester Prairie 6

LESTER PRAIRIE — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop beat Lester Prarie 20-6 in a nonconference baseball game on Tuesday.

GFW was led by Dylan Bernstein, going 5 for 6 with two doubles, a home run and seven RBIs while Ryan Hoffman went 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs. Dominic Rose also went 2 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs and two walks.

Rose was the winning pitcher for GFW, going 4 2/3 innings and giving up five runs on five hits and five walks while striking out eight.

GFW (2-7, 1-6) will travel to Cathedral on Thursday for a doubleheader.

Madelia 14, St. Clair 4

MADELIA — Madelia beat St. Clair 14-4 in a Valley Conference baseball game on Tuesday.

Madelia was led by Jake Lehman, who went 3 for 4 with a double, while Eric Anderson went 2 for 3 and Zach Jacobs went 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

Evan Coil was the winning pitcher, going three innings and giving up two earned runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two.

Madelia (6-1, 2-1) will play LCWM on Thursday.

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

New Ulm girls take second at Fairmont invite

FAIRMONT — The New Ulm girls track and field team placed second out of five teams at a Fairmont track and field invitational on Tuesday, while the boys team took fourth.

Fairmont won the girls side of the meet with a 196.5, followed by New Ulm (113), St. James Area (107.5), Worthington (65) and Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin United.

Fairmont also won the boys side of the meet with a 239, followed by Worthington (126), SJA (71), New Ulm (70) and MCW/B-O.

For the New Ulm girls, Leah Brunstad placed first in the 200 (28.57) and second in the 100 (13.77), while Kaelyn Eikanger placed second in the 400 (1:06.19). Megan Gauert placed second in the 800 (2:41.62). The 4×100 girls realy team of Ellie Dake, Estelle Fischer, Alissa Hoffmann and Sarah Todesco placed second (54.74) and the 4×200 girls relay team of Dake, Alexandra Goff, Marleigh Ebling-Kokesch and Todesco placed second as well (2:02.47). The 4×800 girls relay team also placed second (11:14.08), composed of Ella Ahrens, Jesalyn Skoglund, Gauert and Gracie Barie. Dake placed first in discus (91) and third in shot put (28-3), while Skoglund placed second in high jump (4-10) and Sophia Berger placed first in pole vault (8-8).

The New Ulm boys were led by Ethan Lieb, who placed third in both the boys high jump (5-6) and pole vault (9-8). Easton Clark placed second in long jump (18-6), while Cohen Carpenter placed second in shot put (40-8.5). Brooks Miner placed third in discus (110-3). The New Ulm 4×100 boys relay team of Isaac Friese, Bodee Schmiesing, Jamison Portner and Brennan Shaver placed second (47.37).

PREP GOLF

Springfield boys 184, RRC boys 213

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield took down Red Rock Central 184-213 Tuesday in a nonconference boys golf meet at Springfield golf course.

Both teams were incomplete on the girls side of the meet.

Springfield’s Ben Potter was the medalist for the boys, shooting a 40, followed by Springfield’s Braiden Davis with a 46. Dylan Simpson placed fourth for the Tigers with a 48, and Erik Davis and Noah Vogel tied for fifth with a 49.

Springfield’s Marvi Winkelmann medaled in the girls meet with a 49, followed by Springfield’s Ava Lipetzky with a 55. Kynslee Kasner placed fourth fourth with a 58.

Springfield hosts an invitational on Friday.

SEU boys 172, Cathedral boys 173

SEU girls 214, Cathedral girls 219

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye United narrowly defeated New Ulm Cathedral in both the boys and girls events in a Tomahawk Conference golf meet on Monday, with the boys winning 172-173 and the girls winning 214-219.

Kaleb Weiss and Blaine Arneson led the SEU boys, scoring a 42, while Andres Coulson and Nolan Kucera each scored a 44. Joey Fingland led the Cathedral boys with a 40 as the medalist, with Owen Strei recording a 43 and Will Marti scoring a 44.

For the SEU girls, Sam Price was the medalist with a 49, with Meriden Andres getting a 50 and Kiara Murphy scoring 55. Alaina Blomberg led the Cathedral girls with a 51, while Maddie Gilles scored 52 and Kaitlyn Furth scored a 54.

SEU hosts a home invite on Friday. Cathedral travels to Springfield on Friday.
