Area roundup: New Ulm boys golf team takes 2nd at home invite

New Ulm boys finish 2nd, girls 5th at home

NEW ULM — Battling wind gusts of up to 25 miles per hour at the New Ulm Country Club on Thursday, the New Ulm boys golf team represented its home course well at a home golf invite with four players scoring in the 80s for a team score of 339.

Despite that solid score, St. Peter one-upped the Eagles to finish first after turning in a team score of 309.

Finishing third for the boys at the invite was Le Sueur-Henderson (349), followed by Blue Earth Area (363), Fairmont (369) and Tri-City United (403).

Blue Earth Area won the girls side of the invite with a 364, while St. Peter took second (420), Fairmont took third (427), LSH took fourth (438) and New Ulm finished fifth (469).

The New Ulm boys were led by senior Will Fossen, who shot an 80 to finish fifth, while teammate Brecken Neuman shot an 85th to finish 11th. Mason Buegler shot an 86 to take 13th also for New Ulm, while Will Weidman and Brayden Wendinger each carded an 88 to tie for 16th.

St. Peter’s Kaiden Brovold turned in a 75 to finish as the boys medalist.

The New Ulm girls were led by Brooklyn Hagberg and Elyse Dreckman, who each carded a 112 to tie for 14th. Rory Gieseke shot a 116 also for the New Ulm girls to take 19th, while Sophia Cooke shot a 129 to finish 27th.

BEA’s Payten Gudahl was the girls medalist with an 84.

New Ulm will golf in Marshall in an invitational Saturday morning.

BOYS TENNIS

New Ulm 7, St. Peter 0

ST. PETER — New Ulm swept St. Peter 7-0 in a Big South Conference boys tennis meet Thursday.

New Ulm No. 1 singles Maverick Johnson defeated Ezekiel Ribar 7-6, 6-2, while No. 2 singles Charlie Weidman defeated Luke Gilbertson 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. No. 3 singles Gideon Heins defeated Quinn Dixon 7-5, 7-5, while No. 4 singles Ian Schotzko defeated Brayden Rothenburger 6-0, 6-1.

No 1 doubles Joey Kotten and Dan Brownfield defeated Eli Stoll and Jaxson Schaefer 6-0, 6-4, while No. 2 doubles Aaron Black and Ethan Neet defeated Levi Gilbertson and Ashton Baker 6-1, 6-1. No. 3 doubles Eli Dorschner and Isaac Dittmer defeated Hayden Stensrud and Jerry Soderlund 3-6, 7-6, 6-2.

New Ulm hosts St. James on Monday.

Sleepy Eye 12, BLHS 2 (Game 1) (5 innings)

Sleepy Eye 21, BLHS 0 (Game 2) (5 innings)

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye beat Buffalo Lake Hector Stewart 12-2 in Game 1 and 21-0 in Game 2 in a Tomahawk Conference baseball doubleheader on Thursday.

In Game 1, Sleepy Eye was led by Landon Wendinger who went 2 for 3, while Austin Uecker went 2 for 4 and Caden Evers went 2 for 2.

Marcus Martinez got the win for the Indians, going two innings and giving up no runs and no hits while striking out three.

In Game 2, Sleepy Eye was led by Cody Schultz who went 4 for 4 with two home runs, while Austin Uecker went 4 for 4 with two doubles and a triple, and Issac Lendt, Caden Evers, Kaden Klein and Gavin Strong all had three hits. Carson Uecker went 2 for 2 with a home run and four runs scored.

Cody Schultz got the win, going two innings, giving up no runs and no hits and striking out five.

Sleepy Eye (4-1, 4-1) will host GFW next Thursday, while BLHS (0-6, 0-6) will travel to Wabasso next Thursday.

Madelia 21, MCW 0 (5 innings)

WELLCOME — Madelia cruised past Martin County West 21-0 in a Valley Conference baseball game on Thursday.

Madelia was led by Zach Jacobs, who went 3 for 3 with four RBIs, while Eric Anderson went 3 for 3 with a double.

Zach Jacobs got the win on the mound, going five innings allowing two hits, no runs and striking out seven.

Madelia (4-1, 1-1) will travel to Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda on Friday.

St. Mary’s 14, GFW 1 (Game 1) (6 innings)

St. Mary’s 11, GFW 1 (Game 2) (6 innings)

FAIRFAX — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s beat Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 14-1 in Game 1 and 11-1 in Game 2 in a Tomahawk Conference baseball doubleheader on Thursday.

St. Mary’s was led in Game 1 by Kessler Severson, who went 3 for 4 with a triple, while Talan Helget went 3 for 5 with two doubles.

Mark Anderson got the win, going five innings and giving up three hits, a walk and one earned run while striking out 13.

GFW was led by Dominic Rose, Samuel Berkner and Lincoln Werner, who all had one hit.

Layton Uecker-Hamre recorded the loss, going five innings giving up six hits and four earned runs while striking out four.

In Game 2, St. Mary’s was led by Merrick Mathiowetz, Talan Helget and Jonny Petermann, who all recorded three hits, while Kameron Kosak went 2 for 3 with a double.

Brandon Schmitz got the win, going six innings, giving up three hits, one walk and one earned run while striking out 14.

GFW was led by Dominic Rose who went 2 for 3, while Owen Swenson went 1 for 3.

Samuel Berkner got the loss for GFW going three innings, giving up seven hits, allowing four runs and striking out one.

PREP SOFTBALL

Cathedral 8, Wabasso 1 (Game 1)

WABASSO — New Ulm Cathedral remained perfect with a sweep of Wabasso on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference softball doubleheader.

The Greyhounds won Game 1 by a score of 8-1 and took Game 2 by a score of 3-2.

Abbey Hillesheim pitched seven innings in Game 1. She gave up one run and no hits and struck out three.

At the plate for Cathedral, Ava Schmid went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, while Ava Brennan went 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored. Jenna Hotovec added a home run and four RBIs.

Wabasso’s Avery Carlson took the Game 1 loss. She pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on four hits with two walks and three strike outs. Sara Carlson scored the team’s lone run.

In Game 2, Jayde Altermatt earned the victory. She went five innings and gave up one hit and had eight strikeouts.

Jaylin Hartness went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and one run scored, while Kiah Helget went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Madelyn Haala was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Avery Carlson took the loss in Game 2 as well. She went seven innings, gave up seven hits, a walk, and had three strikeouts.

Avery Carlson and Macy Rohlik each had a hit and a run scored for Wabasso, while Anna Struntz had a hit and two RBIs.

Cathedral (5-0, 4-0) will host Nicollet on Monday. Wabasso ( 4-3, 4-3) will face Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday. The first game will be played in Stewart while the second game will be in Hector.

Springfield 11, MVL 0 (Game 1) (5 innings)

Springfield 16, MVL 5 (Game 2) (5 innings)

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield swept Minnesota Valley Lutheran 11-0 in five innings and 16-5 Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference softball doubleheader. Both games went five innings.

The games were called after five innings due to the 10-run lead rule.

In Game 1, the Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Brooklyn Sturm went 1 for 2 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Abby Groebner went 1 for 2 with two runs scored and one RBI. Emma Hauger went 1 for 1 with two runs scored and an RBI. Rachel Beadell added three runs scored, while Jada Reese went 1 for 2 with a run scored and one RBI.

Jalivia Richert earned the win in all five innings. She gave up no runs on two hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Katlyn Stadick took the loss for MVL. She pitched four innings, giving up 11 runs, nine earned, on eight hits and seven walks while adding three strikeouts.

In Game 2, the Tigers broke open a close game with seven runs in the third inning. It was 3-3 after one inning. Both teams scored two runs each in the second inning.

Reese went 2 for 2 with a double, a triple, three runs scored and three RBIs. Richert was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and one run scored. Sturm went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Hauger added a triple, with two runs scored. Groebner had triple with a run scored, while Ella Gies added three runs scored.

Beadell earned the win for Springfield. She pitched five innings and allowed five runs on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

MacKenna Dressel went 1 for 2 with two runs scored for the Chargers. Briley Henderson went 1 for 2 with two runs scored.

Prahl took the loss for MVL. She pitched 2 1/3 innings, giving up 11 runs (10 earned) on four hits. She walked nine batters and she struck out one batter.

Springfield (7-1, 6-1) will play at Sleepy Eye on Thursday in a doubleheader. MVL (2-4, 1-3) will host Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday in a doubleheader.

BLHS 5, Sleepy Eye 3

Sleepy Eye 9, BLHS 4

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye and Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart split a softball doubleheader on Thursday in Tomahawk Conference action.

In Game 1, Paige Haala went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI. Julia Berkner added one run scored and Megan Sellner had one run scored.

Katelyn Tauer took the loss for Sleepy Eye. She pitched six innings, giving up five runs on three hits while walking six and she striking out 11.

In Game 2, Sleepy Eye scored four runs in the fifth and added three insurance runs in the sixth.

Berkner earned the win for Sleepy Eye, striking out 12 while allowing three earned runs on one hit.

Haala went 2 for 4 with with an RBI and two runs scored, while Berkner was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Jaelynn Schauman was 1 for 2 with two runs scored. Callie Evers added a double and two RBIs. Tauer had a double, one run scored and an RBI.

Sleepy Eye will host Springfield on Thursday.

BLHS will play against Wabasso on Thursday in a doubleheader in Stewart.

St. Clair/Loyola 3, Nicollet 0

ST. CLAIR — St. Clair/Loyola defeated Nicollet 3-0 in a Valley Conference softball game Thursday.

Leah Bode took the loss for the Raiders, striking out six while allowing three hits and no earned runs in six innings. Bode also was 1 for 2 at the plate with a double.

Nicollet travels to New Ulm Cathedral on Monday.

LCWM 15, Cleveland 0 (4 innings)

LAKE CRYSTAL — Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial beat Cleveland 15-0 in four innings in a Valley Conference girls softball game on Thursday.

LCWM was led by Avery Voges and Sydney Kramer, who both had three hits. Kramer had a home run to add to her hit total, while Nettie Parsons, Addie Ahern and Julia Montgomery had two hits.

LCWM was led by Voges and Parsons, who combined to throw a one-hitter in the circle.

LCWM (4-0, 2-0) will travel to Rochester for a tournament on Saturday.

PREP GOLF

Cathedral boys win at Oakdale golf meet

BUFFALO LAKE — New Ulm Cathedral, Minnesota Valley Lutheran, Springfield and Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart and Wabasso competed in a Tomahawk Conference golf meet Thursday at Oakdale Golf Course.

Catheral won the boys side of the meet with a 161, followed by MVL (169), Springfield (170) and BLHS (201). Wabasso was incomplete. MVL’s Ben Pearson and Cathedral’s Owen Strei were medalists with a 37, with Cathedral’s Ben Blomberg running up with a 39. Springfield was led by Ben Potter and Easton Jensen with a 42.

MVL won the girls side of the meet with a 228, followed by Cathedral with a 234. Wabasso, Springfield and BLHS were incomplete. Springfield’s Mavri Winkelmann medaled for the girls with a 50, followed by BLHS’s Ava Ahlbrecht with a 51. MVL’s Jorga Brown and Mackenzie Merseth each scored a 52, while Alaina Blomberg and Kaitlyn Furth each shot 55 for Cathedral.

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

New Ulm places fifth at Waseca Invite

WASECA — New Ulm finished fifth of five teams on both the boys and girls side of the Waseca track and field invite Thursday.

Fairmont won the boys meet with a 181.33, followed by St. Peter (138.33), Waseca (91.83), Sibley East (87.5) and New Ulm (53). St. Peter won the girls side of the meet with a 165.75, followed by Fairmont (125), Waseca (110.75), Sibley East (89) and New Ulm (61.5).

For the New Ulm boys, Ethan Lieb won the boys high jump (5-8) and James Osborne placed second (5-6), while Sullivan Gusso placed third in the boys 400 (54.17).

For the New Ulm girls, Kaelyn Eikanger placed second in the girls 200 (29.68) and third in the girls 400 (1:07.12). Ellie Dake placed second in girls discus (82-11) and Jesalyn Skoglund placed second in high jump (4-8).

New Ulm travels to Fairmont on Tuesday.
