Point after point

Uecker leaves Eagles hockey with several records

NEW ULM — Of the seven hockey records that Austin Uecker set in his career with the New Ulm Eagles boys hockey team, the one that means the most to him is his career-point total of 204.

But Uecker also has set marks that have rewritten the hockey records at NUHS.

Uecker has his name on the top of the list in all-time career goals with 91, all-time career assists with 113, all-time points per game average at 2.37, all-time single season points with 82 and all-time assists in a season with 43.

Uecker, who came through the Sleepy Eye Youth Hockey program, said that he was most influenced by Landon and Kadon Strong.

“They were pretty good hockey players and they came from the same school [Sleepy Eye Public] as I am from,” Uecker said.

On the ice, Uecker may be best described as a basketball point guard who is playing hockey, especially with his 113 career assists.

“I try and focus on a teammate to pass the puck to,” he said. “And if do not have a teammate to pass it to, I’ll try and get a shot on goal.”

And Uecker usually finds the back of the net.

This season, Uecker was ninth in the state with 39 goals and fifth in the state with 43 assists.

“I think that my hockey sense and knowledge of the game helps me a lot,” he said. “I am able to slow down the game to make it easier for myself and my teammates.”

Uecker said that slow down the gane by being calm when I have the puck — don’t panic with it — be smart with it and try and make a play. And don’t force anything.”

Uecker said that as far as next year goes for him he is looking at possibly playing Junior Hockey somewhere.

“And then hopefully play at the collegiate level,” he said. “I have been talking to a couple of teams, but right now I am not certain where.”

Uecker said that he has been talking to New Ulm High School assistant coach Cody Kohn, who played Junior Hockey, and said Kohn has been a big help.

Uecker said that the legacy that he leaves behind in hockey is what the expectations are.

“New Um is going to be a good hockey team,” he said. “And underclassmen and Bantams coming up — don’t take anything for granted. Be smart, because three years goes by very quickly.”
