Area roundup: Hesse grabs 1,000th rebound, Sleepy Eye falls short to LCWM

GIRLS BASKETBALL

LCWM 56, Sleepy Eye 54

LAKE CRYSTAL — Despite Sleepy Eye’s Kadence Hesse pulling down a game-high 20 rebounds and passing 1,000 rebounds for her career, Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial spoiled the performance with a 56-54 win in a nonconference girls basketball game Tuesday night.

Hesse led the way for the Indians in several other areas also, scoring 28 points while getting six steals and five assists. Brea Mertz had 12 points, four rebounds anad four assists also for Sleepy Eye, while Paige Haala had 8 points and six rebounds.

Sleepy Eye (23-3) will host a playoff game on Monday.

St. Mary’s 74, GHEC/T/ML 36

EAST CHAIN — Sleepy Eye St Mary’s rolled past Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 74-36 in a nonconference girls basketball game on Tuesday.

St. Mary’s was led by Morgan Mathiowetz with 27 points, while Natalie Fischer had 12 points and Kylie Pelzel had 11 points.

St. Mary’s (19-7) will host a playoff game against GFW on Monday.

Windom Area 73, Springfield 50

WINDOM — Windom Area took down Springfield 73-50 Tuesday in a nonconference girls basketball game.

Brooklyn Sturm led the Tigers with 14 points, 15 rebounds and six steals, while Emma Hauger had 13 points and six rebounds. Marissa Pabst had 10 points and nine rebounds for Springfield.

Springfield (14-11) hosts Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey Monday in the first round of the Section 2A, South Subsection Girls Basketball Tournament.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Springfield 78, Windom 58

WINDOM — Springfield defeated Windom 78-58 in a nonconference boys basketball game Tuesday.

Springfield was led by Noah Vogel, who had 20 points and nine rebounds, while Bryan Buerkle had 19 points and nine rebounds. Brayden Sturm had 9 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for Springfield.

Springfield (18-6) will host Redwood Valley on Friday.

Cedar Mountain 78, GHEC-T-ML 55

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain beat Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 78-55 in a nonconference boys basketball game Tuesday.

Cedar Mountain was led by Blake Schueller with 39 points, and 15 rebounds, while Brandon Pendleton had 17 points, and nine assists. Blake Steffl had 10 points and six assists.

Cedar Mountain (15-9) is at Lester Prairie on Friday night for another nonconference game.

SJA 76, Madelia 60

MADELIA — St. James Area topped Madelia 76-60 on Tuesday night in a nonconference boys basketball game.

Madelia led 40-37 at the half before SJA came back to pull out the win.

Tony Zaleski and Kaydon Firchau each had 16 points to lead Madelia, while Eric Anderson added 10 points.

Madelia (9-14) is at Sleepy Eye on Thursday night for another nonconference game.
