NEW ULM — Marshall out-shot New Ulm 36-7 as it came away with a 3-1 victory over New Ulm Saturday during Hockey Day New Ulm at the New Ulm Civic Center.
Tristyn Wolner scored the Eagles’ lone goal, with Mya Hornick and Jersey Haugen assisting. Ava Brennan had seven saves for New Ulm.
A bright spot for New Ulm was their continued success on the power play kill, as they did not allow a goal on four penalties.
While Marshall out-shot New Ulm in every period, neither team dominated the offensive zone in the first period, with good defense being played on both sides. Marshall opened the scoring with a goal by Brooklyn Mauch at 12:54, assisted by Abigail Foley and Eliza Holmgren. New Ulm responded quickly when Hornick put the puck in front of the net for Wolner from the right of the trapezoid to score at 15:59.
The second period was much less even, with Marshall taking 17 shots on goal to New Ulm’s one. While New Ulm did kill two penalties in the period, Holmgren scored Marshall’s second goal just moments after the second penalty kill at 16:49, assisted by Mauch and Olivia Penske.
Marshall continued to put pressure on the New Ulm defense in the third, adding their third goal early into the period on a breakaway by Madyson Girard. Any hopes of a comeback late were dampened with two late penalties by the Eagles, who spent the final 1:20 of the game with three skaters on the ice.
New Ulm (7-9-1) travels to Waseca on Tuesday.
