NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College women’s soccer team faced off with Northwestern on the MLC soccer pitch on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights made a late push, scoring three goals in the final 25 minutes of action, but ultimately fell 5-4 to the Eagles.

Northwestern got on the board first with a just a few minutes gone off the clock, after Mya Chan belted a shot from straight away, that slipped past Reba Schroeder.

Katie Schoeneck got back to her scoring ways and connected on a scoring chance off a pass from Naomi Foley to make it 1-1 in the 11th minute.

From there, the Eagles received a pair of goals from forward, Megan Moeller, to give her team the 3-1 advantage heading into halftime.

In the 64th minute, Schoeneck hit her second goal of the game off of a pass from her sister, Rachel. The freshman would then take advantage of a one-on-one breakaway opportunity to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Following the Schoeneck goal, the Knights would apply some game pressure to Northwestern and had some momentum on their side. However, both squads would trade off goals for the next 17 minutes, as Haley Mersberger scored two goals for the Eagles, while Madeline Bourman and Lydia Krenke notched the final pair of goals for the Knights.

Despite the loss, the MLC offense fired off 18 shots (10 on goal) and played hard to the final whistle.

Up next for the women’s soccer team (4-11-2, 3-8-2) is their final home contest of the season against North Central on Saturday, October 28. The game is expected to begin at 1 p.m.
