Thunderbirds weather storm, defeat Clippers in 2A playoffs

WINTHROP — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop advanced to the next round of the Section 2A football playoffs with a 30-6 victory over Cleveland on Tuesday.

No. 3 Seed GFW (6-2) will now travel to No. 2 Seed Lester Prairie for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday. The two teams met on Sept. 22 and the Bulldogs won 32-18.

Tuesday’s rain hampered the passing game. Cleveland quarterback Kale Kelley went 11-for-18 for 35 passing yards. GFW did not attempt any passes. Kelley had two interceptions.

GFW had four fumbles and Cleveland recovered two of them. Cleveland had a fumble, but it was recovered.

GFW rushed 53 times for 287 yards. GFW had the ball for a total of 40:57, while Cleveland had the ball for 29:27.

GFW scored first with 3:57 left in the first quarter on a 5-yard run by Justin Messner. Tristian Kruger ran the ball in for 2 extra points for an 8-0 lead.

Messner scored again at the 5:23 mark of the second quarter on a 1-yard run. Kruger ran the ball in for 2 points and a 16-0 halftime lead for GFW.

Garret Schmidt’s 17-yard TD scamper in the third quarter with 3:49 left made it 22-0. The extra point try was unsuccessful.

Tanner Simmonette ended GFW’s bid for a shutout when he scored on a 10-yard touchdown run with 6:24 to go in the fourth quarter. Cleveland tried to kick for the extra point, but it was not good.

GFW answered with 1:34 left in the contest on a 3-yard run by Regie Mattes. Mattes ran the ball in for the 2-point conversion. That made it 30-6 for GFW.

Messner rushed 25 times for 195 yards and two touchdowns. Schmidt rushed seven times for 62 yards and a touchdown. Mattes rushed seven times for 21 yards and a touchdown.
