NEW ULM — Despite being held to one first-half goal, Marshall came away with a 5-1 victory over New Ulm in a Big South Conference boys soccer match Thursday at New Ulm High School.

New Ulm’s Junior Amoah had the Eagles’ lone goal. Ethan Goff had seven saves for New Ulm.

After allowing an early breakaway goal by Marshall’s Moo Gay, Goff and the Eagles’ defense stood strong in the first half, with Goff making five of his saves in the opening period. However, the offense was unable to get much pressure, with only one shot on goal by Michael Hames in the 36th minute. The Eagles had another scoring opportunity in the 38th minute, but the Tiger defense cleared the ball without a shot attempt.

Goff started out the second half with another save in the 41st minute, but his streak wouldn’t hold as Marshall’s Isaiah Argueta scored in the 55th minute. Marshall followed that up with another goal in the 65th minute by Jared Hernandez.

New Ulm forced more offensive pressure down three scores, with Aaron Black and Owen Dunkel getting shots on goal and Amoah finding the back of the net with a goal in the 68th minute to cut the lead to 3-1. However, the Tigers’ Muhumed Ahmed scored a goal off of a New Ulm penalty in the 73rd minute to push the lead back to three goals. Marshall’s Carlos Ulloa scored one more goal in the 78th minute to seal the 5-1 victory.

New Ulm (7-4-4, 6-4-1) travels to Madelia to play St. James/Windom/Madelia on Saturday.
