Area roundup: MVL takes down St. Mary’s, New Ulm tops Fairmont

MVL 3, St. Mary’s 1

NEW ULM — Minnesota Valley Lutheran took down Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 25-14, 26-24, 20-25, 25-20 in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match on Tuesday.

Ava Munsen led the Chargers with 16 kills, five digs and four blocks, while Gabbie Bleick had 14 kills, seven digs and two blocks. Kerigan Brau added 35 set assists and 18 digs for MVL, Olivia Hammer had three kills, 13 digs and two blocks. Jenna Bates had eight kills, four digs and four blocks for MVL.

Jenica Schroepfer led the Knights with 20 kills and 30 digs, while Reese Hoffmann had 11 kills and 16 digs. Josie Helget had 42 set assists, while Kailey Nelson had six kills.

MVL (4-8, 2-1) travels to Cedar Mountain on Thursday. St. Mary’s (5-6, 1-3) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday.

New Ulm 3, Fairmont 1

FAIRMONT — New Ulm defeated Fairmont 25-9, 25-23, 16-25, 25-12 in a Big South Conference volleyball match on Tuesday.

The Eagles were led by Afton Hulke with nine kills and 13 digs, while Alexa Barstad had six kills and three aces. MacKenzie Enter had 21 set assists and eight digs, while Gracie Linbo had four aces and eight digs.

New Ulm (6-4, 3-2) host Jackson County Central on Thursday.

BLHS 3, Cathedral 1

HECTOR — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart downed New Ulm Cathedral 25-17, 25-18, 23-25, 37-35 in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match on Tuesday.

Jenna Hotovec led the Greyhounds with 13 kills and 21 digs, while Ava Krueger had seven kills and five blocks. Shay Wilfahrt had eight kills and 14 digs, with Jaylin Hartness adding 27 digs. Madelyn Haala had 25 set assists and 19 digs.

Cathedral (4-7, 0-3) is at a tournament in St. James on Saturday.

Wabasso 3, GFW 0

WINTHROP — Wabasso swept Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 25-21, 25-20, 25-22 on Tuesday night in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Camryn Irlbeck led the Rabbits in the win with 13 kills and three blocks, while Lyla Kittelson had nine kills, Alivia Olson had eight kills and three aces and Avery Carlson had seven kills and 12 digs. Also for Wabasso, Sara Carlson had 41 set assists, while Audrey Johnson had 18 digs, Natasha Doubler had 13 digs and Emma Salfer had 11 digs.

For GFW, Taylor Schafer led with 12 kills, while Marti Jacobson had 10 kills and Katelyn Beranek had 16 set assists. Also for GFW, Cheyenne Schmidt had 11 digs, while Halle Bleick had 10 digs and Natalie Ahlbrecht had 11 set assists.

Wabasso (11-5, 4-0) hosts Sleepy Eye on Thursday night, while GFW (2-5, 0-4) is at Springfield on Thursday night.

Cedar Mountain 3, Springfield 0

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain swept Springfield 25-18, 25-13, 25-13 on Tuesday night in Tomahawk Conference volleyball action.

Hailey Hollar led the Cougars in the win with 12 kills and 10 digs, while Reagyn Kleinschmidt had eight kills, Aubrey Steffl had three kills and 14 digs, Kendra Erickson had 20 set assists and Lauren Baringer had 17 digs.

No stats were reported for Springfield.

Cedar Mountain (8-3, 2-1) hosts Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Thursday.

Alden-Conger 3, Madelia 0

MADELIA — Alden-Conger swept Madelia 25-20, 25-12, 25-14 on Tuesday in a Valley Conference volleyball match.

Madelia was led by Ashlynn Sweet’s seven kills, while Ashley Sorenson and Corban Tatro each had four kills and Katherine Devlaeminck had three kills and five blocks. Sorenson also had 14 set assists and eight digs, while Tatro added 10 digs, Jada Taylor had 14 digs and two aces and Alexis Jacques had 11 digs.

Madelia (4-7, 0-3) travels to play in a St. James tourney on Saturday.

Cleveland 3, Sibley East 0

ARLINGTON — Cleveland swept Sibley East 25-17, 25-15, 25-18 on Tuesday in a nonconference volleyball match.

Rachelle Wear led Sibley East with 10 kills, while Karcyn Dose had six kills and eight digs and Lainey Brandt had 27 set assists. Brianna Kettner added eight kills for the Wolverines, while Eliza Williams had 12 digs and Elizabeth Sell had 11 digs and three kills.

Sibley East (4-8) hosts a tournament on Saturday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Fairmont 3, New Ulm 3

FAIRMONT — Fairmont and New Ulm battled to a 3-3 tie on Tuesday in a Big South Conference girls soccer match.

The Eagles got goals from Julia Dewitt on a penalty kick, Kaelyn Eikanger and Jesalyn Skoglund. Ellie Dake had six saves for New Ulm in net.

New Ulm hosts Mankato West on Thursday night.
