Thursday area roundup: SEU wins inaugural game

SEU 34, YME 14

GRANITE FALLS — Sleepy Eye United won their first game as a team 34-14 against Yellow Medicine East Thursday in a nondistrict football game.

On offense for United, Caden Evers had 94 yards passing with two touchdowns, while Jon Petermann was 11 for 68 and a touchdown on the ground. Talan Helget had three catches for 67 yards and two scores.

On defense, Austin Uecker had an interception returned for a touchdown.

SEU (1-0) hosts Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Friday.

MACCRAY 47, Wabasso 7

CLARA CITY — MACCRAY downed Wabasso 47-7 Thursday in a nondistrict football game.

Joe Liebl led the Rabbits with 82 yards and a touchdown on the ground, with Calvin Hanna adding 38 yards rushing. On defense, Boston Brand had 13 total tackles, while Garrett Marotzke had five total tackles and a sack. Hanna had two interceptions on the game.

Wabasso (0-1) hosts Russel-Tyler-Ruthton on Friday.

GFW 22, WEM 6

WATERVILLE – Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop opened the season with a 22-6 win over Waterville-Elysian-Morristown on Thursday night in prep football action.

Justin Messner and Garret Schmidt rushed for touchdowns for GFW, while Braylon Freitag caught a touchdown pass from Dominic Rose. Regie Mattes and Ashton Buboltz caught 2-point conversion passes also for GFW.

Schmidt led the GFW ground game with 88 yards rushing on 23 carries, while Messner had 13 carries for 55 yards. Rose also completed a pass to Easton Taylor for 27 yards.

On defense, GFW was led by Messner’s 7 1/2 tackles, while Ashton Buboltz had 1 1/2 sacks, Alex Johnson and William Bastian each had a sack and Freitag recorded 1/2 sack.
